I ride my youngster in a western saddle... with a horn.

I came to dismount tonight. I always dismount youngsters the English way as I don't want to be stuck with one foot in the stirrup if the horse moves off.

Anyway, my stretchy breeches got looped on the horn. and I got dangled by them before they ripped! Little lad was such a good boy. He didn't move at all whilst I was dangled. Will wear jeans in future. I am so glad no one else was there. The whole of the zip part was ripped out! Crept in to the house with a jumper tied round my waist. Showed OH the breeches... he couldn't stop laughing.

A similar thing happened to me,apart from it was my bra.I was left supended by it and it ended up ripping right up through the middle to release me!!
Im glad im not the only one it has happened to.
It was the first time i had rode western, and the LAST!!!

Please, please don't get off a western saddle the english way - it is sooo easy to get hooked up on the saddle horn (I've done it with a coat, but like you got away with it cos the horse was good) and you could be badly hurt. Make sure the horse stands still (get someone to hold it if you're really worried) and the stirrup is big enough to get your foot out of easily and do it properly!

The only other way if you really must take your foot out is to swing your leg over and sit side saddle before sliding down - but pull your coat or top away from the saddle horn.

As for riding in jeans - if you get the right ones, with heavy enough denim and no inner seam it's sooo much easier than faffing around with jodhpurs and boots (this from someone who has ridden english foir 35 years and continues to do so!)

That method is of getting of sideways is ok unless you are under 5' and ride a 16.3 clydesdale - only way I can get off is to swing leg over and slip. Naturally unless I am on a 10.2 I can't dismount correctly for western riding.

I do agree though about being very careful to make sure all clothing is out of the way of the horn.

Luckily our old boy is nearest thing you'll find to 100% bombproof.

Have to say, I adore the western - you can't beat hacking out on a clydie in a western - like cruising on a hairy sofa.
