I have four months in which to lose two stone and get fit.

I have to hand a keen desire to walk :D. Luckily for me this works as I have no time to go to the gym :o. D2 would like me to go swimming a couple of times a week, I have no idea how I'm going to fit that in lol.

I can go walkies in the morning, at lunchtime and sometimes in the evening.

I have a big ball thing to sit on.

I have a squidgy thingy to stand on (bought to strenthen my ankles).

I have to eat every couple of hours or I fall over, which is very boring.

I am not the type who can go without/cut down and lose a couple of pounds in a week, it just doesn't work for me :(. I end up putting on weight (no idea how that works!). It's definately more the exercise in my case, though I tried Atkins and that worked :D Got very bored of it though lol

Does anyone think it is possible for me to lose the weight and get fit before February? Does anyone who knows what they are talking about want to take me on as a challenge?

Oh, and I'm recovering from a broken back, so there will be physio input that I will have to go with :)

So pleased to hear the brace is off Mrs M. Feb will come round really soon but understand it would be much better if it was NOW!!! I too need to do exactly the same, perhaps we can challenge each other? If I was sensible would wait until New Year to get my next one but not sure I am that patient :-(, and take the time to fitten, drop weight and strengthen my leg and back. I too feel the best way forward is exercise as I am deskbound 9 - 4, but not as appealing as looking after a horse and losing it that way. Will watch this thread with interest for top tips etc. HOpe you feel brighter about it all now its had time to sink in - hugs x

Two stone by Feb is pushing it. You should be looking at losing 1lb to 2lb a week. How did you break your back, was it horse-related? Are you able to build up to running, the NHS has a Couch to 5k running plan that uses podcasts to tell you what to do and motivate you, a bit like having a personal trainer. http://www.nhs.uk/Tools/Pages/couch-5K-running-plan.aspx

I need to lose a stone after giving up smoking and I'm rubbish, I really get the munchies about 4pm. I'd be happy to join you on a fitness plan.

Damm - just typed a long reply and lost it all!!!!

Basic jist....

I'll challenge you, but I give you a * week/month, head start!! So get cracking Mrs M :)

I have some website links I've been bookmarking, (I'll get them sorted and copied) both on the actual structure of the spine and gorey details of breaks etc...inc spinal cord...some very interesting info! But also I've been researching (in mental preparation) for the recovery process....

I expect your new found freedom is great (now it's sunk in!! It must also feel very weird not having the joys of white plastic wrapped around your tummy?! I suspect we'll loose alot of back and tummy muscles from being restrained and I certainly didn't have the strongest/ firmest tummy in the first place The very first piece of advice from my GP is to start working on a six pack! Gentle tummy pulls to start with and building it up so I have a nice flat tummy...if protecting a weak back is not the greatest incentive then nothing will work!

I plan to fit as much hatha yoga in as possible, which I used to do lots of when my horses were both too old/young. The control of the breathe whilst stretching helps with the core strength, as does chakra meditation.

Swimming is only good if you can relax in the water, I tend to swim head out of water and have been advised it's not very good for your posture this way. I might look into some 'back to basic' swimming lessons so I can swim correctly... as it's great having the water support you. My gran enjoys her aqua areobics for this reason, so it might be worth trying?

Oldgit suggested the physio, Brian Simpson, who is unfortunately just too far for me 4 hrs e/w :( - but he's got some interesting treatments, http://www.physioclinic.net/equip.html
including hydrotherapy which I'm going to try once back home.

Pilates is also suppose to be great for core strength, I've tried it and didn't get on with it, too hard! But I shall be trying it again if my physio recommends... and you can't go wrong with walking, just make sure you have good footwear.

I'm also going to see a Chiro to make sure I'm as even as possible before I start building muscles in the wrong places. Between the Chiro's and Physio's and working out a enjoyable programme you'll have fun working towards your target and be ready for riding in no time!

...remember baby steps!!

But i'll certainly challenge you! xx

edited to add......maybe rather than aim to lose weight - change a dress size, or loose an inch on the tummy....only exercise and core strength means more muscles - which weigh more!

From what I remember from doing Pilates a while back, I imagine it would be fairly easy to damage your back doing it wrong, so I'd make sure you go to a class with an instructor and tell them about your injuries so they can make sure you're doing everything correctly and not at risk of hurting yourself:)

Swimming - backstroke?:D

I am sure swimming will do your back the world of good, it did mine :D

I am a fan of listening to paul mckenna's "I can make you think" (although I haven't been listening to it for ages lol). It makes you think about what you are doing when you are eating etc and seems to work well :D

Ah. Hadn't thought of something like that, but I'll give it a go :D

Yay :D. When I get a plan sorted I'll let you know!

I broke it when I got off before we'd finished the jump . My defence is that I was poorly and brain really wasn't with it . I might be able to run again, it's been a very long time!

Would getting one of those step counters help? That way you could look at how many steps you're currently taking and aim to increase by so many or a % per day/over a period of time. Thus in order to hit target you then have to walk quicker = increasing fitness + burning more calories.

As to swimming, one presumes for daughter to go (she scubas doesn't she?)someone has to take her and bring her back? Ergo if one swims at the same time rather than do a double journey that's less time (and fuel) in the car and more exercise. Or if you sit and wait/do work, I use swimming time as thinking time.

Thank you all :D

Dubsie, D2 gave up scuba diving (after I'd bought some gear....), they do go to a lifesaving club though :D. Will work on that one :D

Maizie, wow lass, you've done your homework :D. Once I know what I'm doing I'll let you know and we'll get there :D

I've downloaded the podcasts, so when I get a moment I'll plug in and have a listen :D

I lost two stone in 3 months: Slimming World. It works for me because it's very like how I eat already: the only real change I had to make was limiting dairy and bread/cereal. I do go to the gym 3 times as a week, as well as yoga and riding, but there's no reason why it's not possible with little/no exercise and a few months more time.

The Food Doctor diet is good. Someone on here recommended it. I've been doing it for about a month and have lost 5lb. It has 5 eating opportunities a day which suits me as I get ravenous mid morning and mid afternoon. It's fixed that and I eat fewer calories overall.
Your target is ambitious, better to make changes you can stick to long term even if the weight loss is slower.
Glad to hear you're on the mend. Let us know how you get on.
