Mines got her heavyweight on for the 1st time this year, although its not that heavy as its old and is only a half neck.
And at night shes in one of those weatherbeeta under rugs with a fleace on top but the neck pulled down.

Mine is out 24/7 with trace clip and a medium with no neck. When I can reclip her she'll have a blanket clip and the neck will go on her rug.

Fully clipped TB horse still only in MW rug. Neck cover on to limit the amount of mud I have to scrape off as we have a shared loathing of grooming. When it is cold and dry horses cope exceptionally well, when it is wet in this country it is warmer anyway. Can't see my horse needing his HW rug this year unless we have a repeat of last year's snowfall and associated temperatures - that was the first time in 4 years he'd ever worn a HW rug and it lasted for as long as the serious minus numbers did. At -1 to about -5 or so his MW is fine.

I'm not using a neck so surly that is similar to a medium with a neck?? it's 350 if thats any help....do you think this is too much?

Well that depends - how can I possibly have any idea how cold/hot your horse is?!

I go by keeping condition without me upping food, and warm base of ears (couldn't care less if the tips are cold, it's the base which is important). If both of those are fine then I don't up the rugging. If horse has cold base of ears/shivering/losing condition then assuming it is already on adlib good quality forage I would up the rugging.

My fully clipped horses have their heavy weight Fals on now with lightweight full necks on over the top when they are turned out - it's frozen solid here last night/today - freezing

Trouble is although she is a section D and is meant to be hardy, she was cold when she come in last night, at the base of her ears I could feel a very small bit of warmth, and she wasn't particuly warm under her rug? Although she is a bit chubby so debating whether to just turn her out in her middle weight with out a neck.

Don't think we've even seen a ground frost this year here.

my wb is in 24 7 and has a 350 grm masta stable rug with neck at night and a wbeeta light/med weight during day, but today, prob will have a light fleece underneath as expect yo would have done this today, as she nearly did yesterday.... she is unclipped at present as on box rest!

My gelding has a blanket clip and is out in a medium weight turnout with neck and in stable has a fleece and a medium weight stable rug. When the weather drops eg snow I will add a neck cover to the stable rug and hopefully that should do him.

Fluctuating between all weights, still. Today he's got a borderline LW rug on (blanket clipped). Tomorrow who knows??

Still relatively mild with us.

.

My blanket clipped chilly TB who drops weight quickly, is in his H/W 400g combo today for the first time and a H/W Mark Todd Stable rug with neck and a fleece on at night in his stable.

hunter clipped ISH who lives out 24/7

at this v moment in time - a thin fleece rug, a combo under rug and a HW combo TO rug... it's about 2'C here with a v chilly wind.

sunday - a dress circle sherpa rug, combo under rug and HW TO... that did her just fine for the -8 temps we recorded on sat night and -4 all day sat and sun! she was perfectly warm and happy as larry

Oh you lucky warm english people!!!!!! We had thick freezing fog with max temp of -2 during the day on Fri and Sat!! Fully clipped horses (1 TBx & 1 cob!) had two heavy weights on then!

6 X naked.
1 X underweight who feels cold, LW.
1 x MW, he;s elderly, no natural shelter and drops weight during winter now.

The underweight one has started dropping some weight, so will be upped to a MW when her new rug arrives.

My hunter clipped horse has a fairly light MW on at night with a LW (100g) over the top, both full neck though the neck on the LW is folded back. During the day he's out in a MW, 250g. He can move around outside to keep warm and we still have a reasonable amount of grazing plus hay in the field. We have an american barn which gets quite chilly at night now it's colder so he has a bit more over night. He won't be going into the HWs unless it gets really cold though. Our fields are quite exposed so if we get snow and winds I'll put him in his 300g high neck TO during the day but that's the most he's likely to need TBH. Don't think it's particularly cold ATM.

Welshie is naked and will remain so all winter! Toby - native x type - has mw on at night and naked in day (lw if wet) and TB is in half neck mw (200g).

ETA all out 24/7.

Taz bein an Irish draught usually wouldnt be in a heavy rug yet but we've had ice and snow already so he's in his heavy weight stable rug at night and then in his mw without a neck during the day when in the field as he can at least move about in the field

Both my fully clipped horses have mw combos during the day. At night underrug with mw stable on top. I'll go up 2 hw when they are cold they will soon let me nkow

Well we are in the minus figures at the moment Minus 7 last night. He is out during day and in at night not clipped. Wearing a medium weight stable rug under a medium weight turnout in and out.....change turnout if it gets wet. If it gets warmer stable rug will come off if it gets colder fleece will go on under stable rug.

I like layers even if he does look like Michelin horse!

iv just today added thermatexes so the 2 fully clipped ones in work are out in thermatexes, 350gm stable rugs and 350 or 450g full neck turnouts.

shetland has got a 200gm stable rug on under his 300gm full neck and livery pony is in 3 x 300/350 rugs all with necks!

so shoot me........

both mine are fully clipped and my mare has a HW stable rug on during the day, and at night she has a HW stable and underrug on at night and tonight i am going to put her newmarket between her underrug and top rug as it is going to be -4 here tonight! my gelding doesn't feel the cold so much and has a HW turnout during the day and a HW stable and XLW combo art night again gonna put his newmarket underneath because of the temperature
