after lots of snow we now have sheet ice which is a nightmare even with a 4 x 4. please tell me next week will be better.we live at the top of a single track steep north facing hill that takes forever to thaw.my sister had a serious accident friday, slipped on the ice and has fractured her skull.

Yikes, sorry to hear about your sister. I hope she is much better soon.
We have had barely any snow here, but have just had the ice! It is due to get warmer this weekend, but still with cold nights so unfortunatly I can't see an end yet to the bloomin ice. We are stocked up on grit salt from the builders merchants though so at least have little paths on the yard so it isn't as scary getting from feed room to stable!
You can get things to fit to your boots which will give you more grip http://www.yaktrax.com/Products helpful if you can't get grit down.

Yes, echo FestiveNeighs - I use these on my boots now

and they are a complete revelation! It is impossible to slip and you can walk totally normally n ice. We live on a hill that never gets gritted and even leaving the house used to be a nightmare. I have no worries with the ice-grippers on. (I just have to remember to take them off when I come in to our nice polished wood floor!)
