now what should i do "insurance"

My mare was slightly short in her os hind looked like a knock or strain on her hock so when the yard vet came i got her to check her out she did a flexion test and said that she was short in both hind legs and did i have insurance which i do so she said to get her xrayed and take it from there any way i put her on cortaflex to help with her joints and she is meant to be being xrayed on thursday but she doesnt even look short,lame unsound anymore i think it was just a strain in the field but i had called my insurance company for a claim form so should i go ahead with the xrays ect for piece of mind or just cancel bearing in mind she is quite a highly strung shire x who will have to be sedated to xray

Have always found as soon as a vet hears you are insured they will suggest far more investigative, expensive measures...

PERSONALLY, I would give a bit of time off, Bute/Cortaflex (whichever you think is best) and give it a few weeks, but I tend to do that for any lameness which isnt severe or life threatening. Had a similar thing with my boy, and vet said bute up, light hacking, take off bute in a month to make sure he isnt doing himself any damage and go from there, but then every case is different I guess...I am in no doubt that if I had said I was insured he would have had Xrays and nerve blocking!

hmmm difficult one as you have had a vet look and got claim form
if you leave it and something happens to worsen it you will only have a year from first date to get it put right

I think I would get it checked anyway, as while cortaflex is helping it isn't a cure so if there is a problem at least you can see what treatments there are

you see i agree with both of you here as the shortness i cant call it lame was only spotted by me and a very experienced man down my yard who said he thought cassie looked a little short also she only just been backed about 5 months now and is 8 years old late starter to her working life have only hacked for about 45 mins a day to be honest i hacked her out sat for 30 mins she looked fine but... now if something did happen in a few months or another year the insurance company will be funny about it so i suppoe i will go down the x ray route though i am very old school and dont call the vet unless i really have to

I'm suprised the vet jumped straight in with xrays instead of suggestion a couple weeks-month off then reevaluating.

What would it hurt to rest the horse for a month and then if not right go from there? If it's only a low level lameness is it likely you will be getting treatment for a whole year?
