NP....did someone go to the press????

A Dartmoor hill pony, and correct me someone if i'm wrong, is a heinz 57 type of semi-feral Moorland pony bred by farmers with making a few bob in mind.

A lot are of poor quality, many have congenital disorders..roach backed/deformed limbs etc.

A few make it as riding ponies, but they are nowhere near as nice as Pure bred Dartmoors..which are IMO cracking little ponies.

After the last post on this - I thought Dartmoor Hill Ponies were, in fact, the true sturdy Dartmoor ponies. The 'pure bred' dartmoors have all sorts in (arab welsh?) I believe but I may be totally wrong and forgotten what was posted so correct me if I am.

Forgot to add I think the reason for the spotted etc ponies is due to demand.

To see ponies on the moor is a delight, and certainly many people who stop in our shop are on their way to the open moor and want to see the 'wild ponies', I certainly hope that ponies remain on the moor. The ones that we see on the eastern side of the moor (Moretonhampstead area) are often coloured, and are of the sturdy 12hh variety. There are various groups and charities dedicated to helping the dartmoor pony in it's different guises, and I think I'm right in saying that there are three recognised types - the Heinz 57, any type or colour, the Heritage pony, which is of dartmoor type and solid colour only, but not a registered pure bred, and the purebred Dartmoor pony. Google dartmoor pony and lots of information will come to light.
