Just wondering if anyone knows if there is a compulsory colour for numnahs for the dressage phase? I've searched the rule book and can't seem to find anything? M's first be on Sunday and it's been quite a while since I competed affiliated!
Thank you!

It is not clear in the rulebook, or certainly did not used to be, but they do prefer white, I was writing one day when the steward and judge were debating eliminating someone for having a black square, they did allow her to compete as the rulebook did not clearly state white only but the judge was not very happy about it.

The judge should have been shot if they had eliminated for a black saddlecloth.

Generally everyone wears white. But any plain/subtle colour is fine - black/navy/brown

She was very seriously considering it, I was strongly on the side of the competitor and probably helped her cause as it was not in the rulebook, the guidelines are to refer to BD for anything not specified, which does allow some plain colours, I did go through the BE forum afterwards and the answer given by BE to the same question was white only, so why do they not put it clearly if that is what they want.
It could be a very expensive trip out to not even set foot in the arena, I was amazed that the judge could be so picky at the lower levels, it was 80 or 90, hardly Badminton.

Ah thank you! I just resent buying yet more White numnahs as they always seem to end up filthy after ten minutes! I think I will do though as we'll need every bit of help we can get!

I hate white numnahs, and with a very short backed horse, a square looks ridiculous on him.

I use a black Lemieux wool edged numnah, it looks smart, and I've never had a judge or steward make a comment, BD or otherwise.

I did carefully read the BD rule book - it says 'plain colour'.

My sons horse is slightly long backed, so she wears a Lemieux square which is a very dark grey/black - she has done about a dozen BE events with no comments made.

Just because its not the current fashion, it doesn't mean its wrong!
