My horse has a bit of an upset tummy so someone suggested feeding dry bran to dry it up. But I thought bran mash cleared them out? So how can dry bran stop poorly tummy's? Told you it was a numpty question!

My understanding is that dry bran bungs them up a wet sloppy mash will clear them out.
I find giving some old hay and keeping them off the grass for a few hours will help to.

Yeah that's what I thought too. Just making sure it's right as gave him a little dry bran tonight but will give some more in the morning. Any ideas of how much I should give? He's only 1 and 10.2hh. Only have him a handful tonight as he's not used to it.

If I had a horse with an "upset tummy" the last thing I would feed would be something to "dry him up". You don't know why he has a tummy ache and if it's a low grade colic, pumping him full of a drying out agent could be extremely dangerous by causing an impaction. With us humans, the advice with upset tums, diarrhoea etc is NOT to give kaolin based stuff (a "drying up" agent) but to give electrolytes/salts while allowing the body to keep excreting the infective agent.

At his age and size, I would be more inclined to give him some natural yoghurt which will help the bacteria in the gut as a probiotic does. While I like and use bran sometimes, I'm not a fan of it for youngsters. Have you had him checked out?

It's a total myth!

You're best just getting as much fibre into him as possible- hay, grass and alfalfa/ lucerne pchaffs work best.

He seems fine in himself and has only been like it for a couple of days. Will get him checked though if it carries on for much longer.
