I went to visit my mare tonight and whilst I was there she was covered by the stallion but when he pulled out there seemed an awful lot of wastage if you get my meaning

is this normal? He was having a hard time as my mare is 16.1 and he is about 15.0 I suggested he may need a box to stand on......! sorry if this seems a bit of a silly question but it is the 1st time I have bred from my mare and the only time I have seen a horse covered in hand.

There are good coverings and bad ones, our stallion is the opposite, the daft devil lies on the mare for ages afterwards so anything still coming out (

) goes in the mare. We have to presuade him to get off!
Usually there is enough semen for it to work even if some comes out afterwards, but if the mare is very tall we have been known to scrape some of the sandy floor away to assist the stallion. You'd be surprised how they manage however, they can cover much bigger mares.
In the wild they would persuade the mare to stand downhill, I've seen one of ours cover a 12 hh mare (he was a chunky 16. 1 hh) when he escaped and chased her for two hours, eventually she stopped facing uphill and bingo the deed was done. Luckily she suffered no tear and was so old she didn't get in foal, but it was one of the worst days of my life re traumas and horses..
I should add he'd jumped a huge fenced bank, popped over the bank on the other side, then jumped a metal six bar gate, then jumped over a post and railed electric topped fence to get at her.. we're not that negligent..

That's perfectly normal - it's post-ejaculate fluid. Assuming he was in the right place when he ejaculated, the semen will have been 'shot' straight through the cervix.

Thanks for your answers guys. I just guess I will have to keep everything crossed that she catches.....? she has already been running with this stallion for 2 months without getting in foal but neither of them have shown any interest in each other but when we had her scanned on Monday there was an egg ready and he has now covered her 3 times, once naturally running with the herd then the vet was down looking at another foal last night so they covered her in hand, and then when we turned up they were showing interest again so they covered her again.

I think I'm going to cry!!! They will 'show interest' non-stop until she goes out of season - which is usually 3-5 days after the time at which she will first stand. Repeated covering does not enhance her chances of getting pregnant (it does enhance her chances of having excess fluid and NOT getting pregnant!!!) Accepted practice is to cover ONCE every 2nd day until the mare goes out.

She wont be covered in hand anymore, but is out with the stallion....as she has been out in the herd for 2 months - what should i do?
