Numpty question - jodhpurs v breeches

I have always been (only) a happy hacker and always worn jodhpurs whether with short boots or long.

What are the differences/advantages to wearing breeches?
 
Much prefer breeches to ride in as they fit the lower leg better.
Also, unless you have short jodhs' its so awkward trying to wear chaps over the top - and will wreck good long boots at the ankle due to the amount of fabric the boot encompasses there if not in breeches.
I do have a couple of pairs of jodhs, but will only use them for yard work or very occasional hacking with old chaps over the top.

edited to add: like clippi, am short legged so breeches do me a great job :)
 
The in seam on jodhpurs runs the full length of the leg and can be worn with whatever - breeches finish half way down the calf so would pinch if you were wearing with short boots (although it seems fashionable to wear breeches with long socks and short boots.

I personally only ever ride in breeches, they hold a better shape.
 
Breeches all the way, no bulky fabric around your ankles and jods don't fit under boots well unless you wear the rubber ones....(boots that is).
I have no shame walking around the supermarket in my breeches and brightly coloured socks and dolly shoes, as long as I don't smell like the horses stable..yuck!

Ditto this, i always have to cut and re hem or fold up jodhpurs so go with breeches as they hve less bulk around the ankle area.
I also find generally that breeches are made of nicer fabrics too, i'm not keen on the super stretchy jodhpurs as find they stretch too much and end up getting rid as they are then too big.

ooooohhhhh......rubber jodphurs....now that's a whole different look. :)

I tend to wear jodhpurs most of the time, because I find the Velcro on breeches is in an annoying place and rubs. No problem getting them into long boots?

I have recently been eyeing up the new style breeches with knitted cuffs and no annoying Velcro though :)

Maybe I've spotted a gap in the market here, they could be waterproof, help you stick to the saddle and you can just hose them off at the yard! they might be a bit tricky to get in and out of though...

With the velcro rubbing thing put your socks under the breeches then they don't rub :)
 
I sort of guessed that the bulkiness could be the reason but wasn't sure and didn't want to admit my ignorance!
 
I wear jodhs with long boots/chaps, not bulky at all... but I am v long legged and tend to let the hem out on jodhs that aren't specifically LONG jodhs. Have tried breeches but very uncomfortable? Finish practically at me knees and the velcro also irritates me, even with long socks...
 
I find the bulkiness of jods actually helps me out around the ankles - I've got stupidly wide calves and apparently quite normal ankles by comparison. I wear Ariat Trent boots to ride in and the bottom of the three fasteners is way too loose and starts slipping down without a nice fold of jod underneath it to pad it out a bit!
 
Yes breeches are more comfy with long boots however my competition riding wear is a pair of jods and love wearing them with my long boots.
 
Breeches normally stop below the knee/mid calf and fasten with velcro, depending on your height/leg length and the brand of breeches some stop just below the knee others stop at the ankles. They are commonly worn with long boots or half chaps and short boots as it stops you getting a "bunch" of fabric around the ankles which can be uncomfortable if you're putting chaps or long boots over them.

Jodhpurs are full length and go right down to the ankle and are designed to be worn with jodhpur boots (usually the jodhpur is stretchy and is worn just over the top of the boot, sometimes held in place with an elastic strap to go under the boot) but if a pair of jods fit you well and are not too bulky many people wear jods with long boots and chaps too.

I wear breeches for competition and hunting with long boots and jods with half chaps for everything else.
 
None of my breeches (Pikeur and Rugged) end just below the knee or half way down my calf. All go down to my ankle and I don't have to wear particularly long socks. I'm not a short-arse either. Much more comfy than jods for wearing with long boots or gaiters.
 
You've probably already seen the tread but Aldi are selling jodhpurs on Sunday 27th they are actually more like breeches I'd say I bought some in the summer really nice quality and great value :)
 
I can't stand breeches. I wear them for shows (find most cream/beige/yellow things are breeches nowadays) with either long boots or half chaps, but hate the Velcro and they just look so stupid if you take your boots off. I happily wear jods under short boots and half chaps - don't find them remotely bulky around the boot area, despite having huge cankles!
