Numpty question - riding after the farrier?

Is it OK to ride immeiately after the horse has had new shoes?

Sorry, probably a very stupid question

Depends on the horse but yes. Although I would steer clear of jumping or going over stoney ground for a day.

I don't see why not. I probably would avoid too much fast trotting on the roads etc but unless your horse has a habit of going lame after being shod (or crap farrier

!!) then I would say go for it!!

No reason why not to - the horn of the hoof has no nerves in it, so the horse shouldn't feel anything. Some horses (like Tango!) can be sensitive, but in your case you shouldn't have a problem. Why are you asking?

thanks folks

jumpthemoon - farrier is coming tomorrow and the fatty-pony will have already had 2 days off (dentist coming tonight) so I really need to ride tomorrow night, he can't really have another day off!

cant u lunge him both nights?

Unfortunately me "lungeing" Murphy usually results in me ending up flat on my face in the dirt, while he canters off in to the distance

You can ride, jump do whatever after shoes have been fitted. If you have any problem then they haven't been fitted properly. As for the shoe bedding in

if the horse has been hot shod then it will be bedded in.

Thrown shoes are replaced at events, racing etc & the horses go on to compete so just go for it.

jumpthemoon - for some reason I thought I couldn't ride straight after his teeth had been done...looks like he might get ridden tonight as well then

He was allowed yesterday off to recover from his trip to the gallops!!

Toby_Zaphod, thanks, hadn't thought about shoes being replaced at events etc!! I will defo ride tomorrow then

If you're worried about it ask the dentist, but unless he has to do something pretty drastic, there's no reason why you can't ride him. Will PM you about the gallops - I'd forgotten you'd been there!

Only thing we always do is put on overreach boots--having pulled new shoes jumping soon after shoeing and causing quite a bit of damage! Admit horse short coupled and does overtrack

I give my girl day off after shoing because she is old and stiff (bit like me) I also try to warm her up prior to shoeing to help her out a little.

Another vote for riding same day as shoeing. Dentist came out to our yard last week to do 5 horses, 3 of them were rode the same day (including mine) and no problems at all.

Very rarely any reason to not ride after shoing or dentist. There will be a few exceptions, but you would be warned.
