Numpty Question(s) - RE Head Tossing

No one has said it will be a solution, but unless you try how do you know. She might put in on and problem solved but then again it might not be but there is only one way to find out- try it! If not its back to the drawing board.
And the good thing about a standing is that it applies no pressure to the mouth which the OP states the cob does not like.

Kat- I agree a novice can learn to fit one, however like I said if I thought she required one I think it is best she fits it under the eye of someone who can explain both the use & fit to her. Like I say, to me mis-use is anything being used for a purpose it was not intended for, whether that's a martingale to stop jogging or anything else, not whether its cruel.
Also I will phrase my responses however I please, I would not tell you how to phrase yours, please extend the same courtesy to me.

I really don't care how you phrase your responses. I was just concerned that you seemed to rubbish a perfectly valid and reasonable suggestion for no reason. People are so quick to trot out phrases about the misuse of gadgets and unnecessary gadgets without considering whether they might actually be a legitimate tool to solve a problem and whether they can be used without harming the horse. I agree 100% that gadgets shouldn't be misused however putting on a piece of equipment that is basically entirely neutral if not needed on the basis that it might help someone cope with a problem is not misuse of a gadget.

Anyway I'm not going into this further, I didn't want a fight, I just couldn't understand why you would advise against a standing martingale in the circumstances and didn't want the OP put off trying a very helpful bit of kit.

Kat- fair enough, don't really want to hi jack the ops thread to argue. If someone had made a suggestion as to how to ride through her issues & mentioned using a martingale & what its correct use was, I wouldn't have thought anymore of it. I only took issue as 2 posters just suggested one without any further comment as to what it would help with.

Back from the yard!

Littlelegs, I have to admit I did find your first post a little unhelpful! I am not a complete novice, but the whole story is very long and I will not bore you with the details lol!

Mr Cob came from a trekking centre around 4 years ago after a 6 month stay, they decided he was unsuitable for a trekking horse due to his general outlook on life I would say.

My original post probably wasnt the clearest, but I do not mind the bouncyness or the freshness, thats fine. What I find worrying at times is that the headtossing becomes such an issue that I find myself starting to become unbalanced in the saddle, and most of his breaks lie in my seat lol. I am not however, worried about riding him through it, I just want to be able to do it effectively... I do ask alot of silly questions, but I find this is how I gain most knowledge.

I have tonight tried out a standing martingale in the field with him, he has had a small paddy with him trying to stick his nose up in the air but seemed to settle after 20 minutes of transitions between walk and trot. He was very calm for the next 20 minutes and I decided to go out for a wander down the lane with OH and his mount to cool down and wound up Mr Cob came back. Tried shoulder in and this worked 2 or 3 times before he had wound himself up into a frenzy, even though I had him on the buckle. He did attempt head tossing, but was unsuccessful, and decided that bucking should replace this... Nothing major... just annoying...

Ah well lost one thing and gained another... Still none the wiser!

Okay a bit of an odd sujestion but may be everytime he head tosses push him forward into a working trot and make him work and dont stop him untill he has settled and then bring him back into walk and as soon as the headtossing starts up again work him again.....but dont stop as soon as you feel him relax or tire do it when you want to. Mine sometimes head shakes while ridden and i ask for hard work like leg yeildig, counter bend and others to get her concentrating on me and not what she wants to do.

Its not a quick fix, you will have to work with it over a few weeks so get it into their brains.

Xxx

Yes will try that! I'm going to have to be very persistant with him lol!

OH is going to ride him for me tomorrow and mentioned he was going to do some schooling of sorts with him. I won't have time to ride tomorrow () but perhaps a schooling session with OH might have an impact. At the moment I think a day off would do him more harm than good, particularly when he's been so full of beans recently, he does not react well to being left in the field...

Wish I could watch it mind... 6'2" leggy 11st OH used to riding young big 17.2hh+ sports horses riding 15hh of heavy weight cob! *Chuckles*

Oh, am sorry the standing martingale didn't work for ur boy, as you can imagine I hav not commented on llegs posts, I hav thoroughly explored all avenues with my instructor and we have tried lots of things, and the standing works for him, to the point now that we have a running martingale on him, as I said I've explored lots of things, and I now don't get smacked in the face with my horses head. Hope your oh can sort your boy, and lots of luck
Kate x

I don't know whether to try the martingale again for the next week or two to see whether he does settle eventually. Will see what oh thinks tomorrow...

I can think of a few ideas that might help, but as you found my original post suggesting how to ride through it, before anyone mentioned martingales, unhelpful then i'll just wish you good luck.

Littlelegs you seem to be a bit sensitive, I did not mean you any offence! Your first post regarding the use of martingales was unhelpful as you didn't state any alternative. You then got into a discussion with other members, which I have read but will not comment on. Other members have given me some ideas that I have taken on board. I do not however feel like I deserved your last sarcastic remark.

Sorry wasn't being sarcastic, wish you good luck. My first post did not refer to martingales, & was infact the first reply you got, so just thought it was a bit rude to say it was unhelpful when I'd made valid suggestions.

I have simply been mistaken then, I thought your first reply was regarding martingales.

I appreciate you have appologised for the sarcastic comment. However, being rude is not something I am by any means.

Not apologized for a sarcastic remark, just that you took it that way. Just like I took your comment my post was unhelpful as rude, when in actual fact you hadn't even read it. Apology accepted. Easy to get crossed wires on an internet forum.
