Numpty question

YES! YES! YES!

If you load without being hitched the trailer could tip up when your horse steps top of ramp. Like an inverted SeeSaw.

When I was a kid they had an unhitched trailer in a Handy Pony class, I withdrew because I knew it wasn't safe- but a few still went in but missed the trailer, but then a chunky pony 13/13.2hh i guess stepped to top of ramp, the ramp and back end of trailer slammed to the floor and the roof of the trailer came over missed the pony's back by inches. No ones was hurt and amazingly the pony didn't spook, but if the horse had been bigger then an injury would have definitely happened.

Please don't try it!

Here is my numpty bit to add out of curiosity... do any trailers have the legs that come down in the corners to stabalize it like caravans do ?
(have always had a lorry)

Some do and some dont!
I found this out the hard way when I broke down on the motorway the other week and had to swap towing cars over!
Our Ifor trailer didn't, and I was worried it would not be stable when we took the first towing car off. I think you can buy them though and attach them, which is something I'm looking into doing in case there's a next time!

Thank-you ! That really interesting to know, will bear in mind if I ever get a trailer

Did the pony win?

I can't remember, but it should have- pony was a saint! Wonder how keen it was to load to go home :o/

Its not just a case of the trailer tipping backwards the jockey wheel is only designed for manouvering the trailer when it is empty, if you are not hitched on to a car then half a ton of horse is being supported at the front by one bolt tightened by hand.
Incidentally a friend of mine wanted to borrow my trailer so she could do her NVQ in horse loading. The assessor who asked all sorts of ridiculous questions about what you should check before setting off (the amswer my friend didn't get was 'Does the car have an MOT certificate?'), said it was perfectly safe to demonstrate loading into a trailer that wasn't attached to a car!
