I have previously loaned a horse with sarcoids, so am aware they dont spread, or at least didnt from him to the other 6.

However, I was quite young when he had them, and not fully aware of the situation.

We are looking at a horse that has a sarcoid, and has previously had some removed soon. Is there anything that sarcoids can do/stop a horse doing? Is there anything I should look out for with them?

Any info on them and any problems they cause would be greatly appreciated!

As far as I'm aware they don't spread from horse to horse; or at least, mine has them and the other horses he is out with have never developed the same type as him, or indeed, any at all.

You can do anything with a horse that has them, as long as they're not in an awkward place - eg. bridle/saddle area or anywhere that hinders the horse's movement, for example, if they're in folds of skin and movement is making them bleed.

Mine has a couple of the warty type and a lot of the flat, occult sarcoids around his sheath area, which are thankfully going due to Thuja tablets and yes, I know some people don't think they work but I am 100% convinced that T's are going because of them & Pink Powder. He jumps, does dressage (qualified for the Trailblazers champs this year), hunts all winter, shows, does Le Trec, goes down the beach, gets ridden 5/6 times a week and they don't hinder him. The only thing I will say is that they can be the result of or cause a low immune system, so be wary of that.

i had a horse with sarcoids and they didnt affect her at all - i had her for over two years and they didnt grow or spread. As long as you dont want a horse to show i wouldnt worry - there is a lot of people that would say different but i think a lot of people are ignorant as i think you can only really comment on what you have had experience with and not what you read or hear - the main thing really is not to put anything directly on the sarcoid as this can irritate it :)

Depends on what type of sarcoid as some become huge and weeping and are very unpleasant for the horse and can be spread by flies to any other open wounds on the horse. Once treated you can never be sure they won't come back or develop elsewhere and if the horse has them already as opposed to developing them later you won't be able to insure against them and treatment can be very costly. They also devalue a horse. I understand this is not always the case and so some people do not consider them a problem, best case scenario but having been in the worst case scenario and horse developed all types of sarcoid (one which could potentially become cancerous on face) I would never knowingly buy one with sarcoids. Sorry but only fair to point out all eventualities :-(

Prof Knottenbelt at Liverpool Vet school is a sarcoid expert - maybe have a look on their website for sarcoid info. Good luck!

Fantastic, thank you so much for the help!!

Not so worried about the insurance, would only get them sorted if they became a problem.

I shall have a look at that website, thank you for telling me about it [=

My horse has hundreds of them, IMO spread from when he had 3 treated by the liverpool cream. They are now excluded from insurance and I know there will come a time when they spread to the saddle/girth area and I will have to PTS. I would never buy another horse with a sarcoid

Oh gosh I am so sorry to read this, having been half way there myself I can understand only too well how awful you must feel and what a nightmare to be in your position. Unless you have experience the extremes like this you have no idea how upsetting and stressful it all is. Hugs to you and I hope it will be a long long time before things get this bad for you but would totally echo your words - I would never knowingly buy another horse with sarcoids either :-(

Thank you. I have had him 5 years and he didn't have any when I bought him. If I could afford to keep him as a pet in a field somewhere then I would, but as a TB he drops weight very quickly on just grass. Hopefully we have a few more years before I have to do anything.
