all the classes that are suitable for me and my boy are in the in-hand ring. at the same show in june, there was a mixture of people riding and in-hand in the same ring. does it really matter?

Depends what you are asking is the matter... Does it matter their were ridden and in hand horses in a ring at one time or does it matter if you ride your horse in a in hamd class??

Heres a couple of points to help answer both...

If you are entering an in hand class then you would not be able to ride the horse under saddle in the class, it must be shown "in hand", In hand and ridden classes are seperate classes.

In some ridden classes you may be asked to do a small inhand show where your horses conformation will be judged. After your individual show you will be asked to dismount and "strip down" your horse. This means taking the saddle off the horse and getting yourself in a position to lead the horse in hand i.e take rains over head. When called you take the horse forward in hand for the judge to look over and then you will be asked to walk the horse in hand away from judge and trot back. You will then be asked to saddle back up and get back on your horse for the results.

In championship classes, eg the mountain and moorland or coloured classes there will usually be a championship class where all first and second paced horses/ponies from these classes, in hand and ridden go into the ring at the one time and be judged for "best of breed" if that makes sense, so you will see in hand and ridden horses in the ring at the same time for something like that.

Ossy covered most of it but in classes like best condition and fun showing classes, you will often find a mixture of ridden and in-hand unless it specifies how the horse is to be shown.

Benpony you say they were in the same ring so why don't you contact the show organisers & ask them. We can only tell you what is done normally. They might have decided to be different.
