Ok here goes:

What is the best thing to fill them in with, I have been told cotton wool packed in? How do you get it out, and can you ride with it in, or do you have to put studs in?

I could never cope with studs as I found them a bugger to put on/take off, but as far as I know you pack them with cotton wool, you pick it out with a farrier's nail or similar when you want to put studs in, but you ride with the cotton wool in when you don't need the studs, e.g. on roads.

Poke it in with a nail from the farrier or the pointy thing in the stud kit, pull it out again with the same. Or get those little rubber plugs. I just leave the plugs/cotton wool in all the time unless I want studs then it comes out. You don't have to ride with studs.

I used to use a dab of kochaoline and a cigarette filter, but on yo's advice now leave them without anything in. I wouldn't bother filling the holes if I was you, it's easier to clean out the mud than get the cotton out ime.

even if you do put cotton in, you can leave it in, you don't need to change or put studs in for everyday riding.

I stopped plugging mine this year as it was harder to get the cotton wool out than a bit of mud! I do clean them the night before they are needed and plug them then as it is easier than doing it at a show.

Our grazing here is on gravel so getting a tiny piece of stone wedged in hole a nightmare
Used to use raw sheeps wool--doesnt disintegrate like cotton wool, slightly oily so stops rust forming
Def agree with cleaning holes night before competition, struggling to clean holes with horse tied to trailer in a field somewhere no fun

Hiya

Ive used metal sleepers and cotton wool and gave up on them both. I am currently using rubber bungs, stick a farriers nail and pull them out really easy and saves having to clean them all the time. These are the easiest things i have found and you can get a pack of 20 for £3.10. Expensive compared to cotton wool but once you've cleaned your holes there clean just stud up, take em out and bung em back up.

We use Brasso (the stuff for cleaning silver/brass - impregnated cotton stuff).
Poke it in with a farrier's nail and remove it the same way, then spray with WD40, clean the hole out with nail and tap the holes.
I then put in the Supastud travel studs the night before - stress-free studding up at the show!
