hi there guys just a quick question and opinion please. ellie is 9 months old and at the vets advice she was to be given nothing to eat in the way of hard feeding as she was a very foal and was a high risk of OCD. she gets adlib haylage and has a great appettiet

My plan would be to hopefully do some in had showing with her over the summer etc however i feel although she is lacking topline and also worry that she is not getting the correct minerals. have you got any suggestions on what i can give her if anything

here is is last week

thankyou for any advice

Personally I think it is best not to over complicate a youngsters feed.
Your filly will not get topline per say at her age as they are simply growing.
The only thing I could think is give her a balancer of some kind if you want to.

ETS: We never gave our youngsters hard feed, they grew into lovely horses, just as a point of interest, or not, you decide.

She IS a leggy girl! Is she toeing out?? I would certainly not want to give her anything other han good quality hay/haylage, and a MODEST amount of a good stud balancer I use Bailey's, but at a much lower rate than recommended, and add a little Sure Limb to boost the vitamins/minerals.

Please don't panic! My boy looked similar to her this time last year (if not a little worse) and he was a yearling. Come early summer he had really blossomed and all he was on was add lib hay, a handfull of hi-fi lite and a tiny amount of speedi beet with access to a dengie stable lick.

IMO and having had a REALLY bad experience, with my filly developing OCD I would steer well clear of balancers and anything rich like Alfa-A (also on advice of my vet)

re her topline - do you feed her haylage from the floor) if not start doing it. My boy has a fantastic topline and this is all I can put it down to... and as for showing, don't take it too seriously... she may not do so well at the start of the season but may do better later and even better as a two or 3 year old... it should be all about the experience when they're really young...

this is him when I got him in February...

The people that were saying he looked like a 'hatrack' and 'RSPCA case' are well and truely eating their words now...

Thank you!

He only turned two in October - very late baby and so yes, still has a considerable amount of growing and filling out to do - he has changed so much even since the september photo... he stands at 16.1hh now so I expect him to finish up around the 17.2hh mark when he stops growing at 7 ish.. He's huge, can be very stubborn but is soft as butter...
