Hi guys,

I'm just putting the feelers out just to see if this is worth while. I have been thinking for a long time now about going into equine nutrition, I have a degree in biochemistry and am going to be doing an MSc in nutrition hopefully. In the meantime I am looking to go on an equine nutrition course to study how to make herbal supplements such as calmers, those to promote growth and muscle development, bone and joint health etc.

I was hoping to start making them for others and I was wondering whether anyone thinks that might be a good idea and what the market for it would be. It would be all natural and bespoke depending on the horses needs, I have done nutrition modules in my degree and have experience in feeding my own horse these herbal supplements and have had great results. Obviously I wouldn't start until I was qualified but I would anyone even be interested? I would love your feedback.

Thank you,
Pony love from Lucy X x x

Personally , I think it's a good idea though I'm not sure how much of a client base you'd have....you may have to travel alot to make enough money. What I'd love is what you are considering but with grazing/ forage mineral analysis and a weighbridge thrown in. I am currently spending a great deal time and money trying to work out exactly what each of my 3 horses with very different needs requires in terms of supplementation as I seem to be drowning in a sea of supplimet tubs and I know many of the constituents are duplicated...I have a good idea of their weights based on previous weighbridge visits but would like go be sure and have sent off samples for mineral analysis ....next stage is to sit down with a spreadsheet and my equine nutrition books to work out what is needed.......then I have to source them.....Yep I'd love someone to do that all for me!

I think it would be a great thing to do but unsure if you would be able to be competitive against the bigger companies such as ForagePlus, Pro Earth, etc who are also doing natural remedies - what do you think?

Have a look at the Equivita site, shes doing very similar. I dont know if she makes an actual living from it or if its just a side line, but I have never had anything other than brilliant customer service from her, so thats something you would have to ensure :)

I can't comment on the commerical side of things and making your own supplements. But I can recommend the Equince Science Masters in Edinbrugh. I've taken the nutrition and exercise physiology modules and they are just great! You can also just do two modules to obtain a postgraduate certificate. I'm a nutrition freak and the nutrition module really got me on the right track, a year later I'm still learning and studying equine nutrition. Goog luck!
