Is NVQ 1 equivilant to BHS 1 or what?

sorry probably not helpful but i wouldnt take the nvq's personally!
Yrs ago when i worked with horses they tended to go for the bhs qualified rather than the nvq...(bhs is shite also in the sense it needs seriously updating and when you run a busy yard you would get knowhere running it as they would want you too

Just my opinion though, others will probably see it differently

no, if you have an nvq you cant skip certain bhs stages, i have a national diploma in horse managment and was almost given a job grooming for the mounted police but wasnt aloud because i didnt have my bhs 2, people dont look at nvq and national diplomas these days. like hadfos said, they prety much do all the work for you. you could apply for a job and have 2 years college horse experience and get turned down, but read a book and take a bhs exam and get the job.

As the others have said really. NVQ's are an awful lot of paper work and time, but actually worth very little. Much easier and more respected to do the BHS exams.

Completely agree with this, it was a complete waste of time, and generally mean nothing. I only did the NVQ as it was part of my college course. As it happens, I have my stage 1 and 2 anyway, but don't intend to use them, unless i have too!

I am not sure about that you also need your riding and road safety before you can do your stage two, but you are probably better of doing your Bhs exams, I have done stage one and riding and road safety, doing my stage two in september, well starting part time studying for that.
As I want to work in mounted police, and you need your stage two for that, I did apply to be told stage two is needed, was gutted as will be lucky if another job comes available, but going to get that out of the way so I can apply again.

You have to do your Bhs stages from the start and work up them. I have a NationalDiploma in Horse Management and had to start with stage 1 and Riding and Road safety and then onto stage 2 and 3. NVQ's are not that great to be honest!
