I expect the pros are just as hit as it will get to the stage where owners cannot afford all the extra charges going on a bill as everything would have gone up for them.
It depends on what your margin for error is doesn't it - if you are eventing on a budget but have disposable cash elsewhere in your life then increasing costs of fuel may be something you can deal with by cutting back elsewhere. If like me when mortgage and bills etc are paid for there is less than £200 a month left, which is what is used for fuel to the yard (give or take) per month, then the increase becomes unsustainable and over time you gradually creep into the overdraft. This hasn't been an overnight thing, it's something which has become apparent over several months, and I can only see it getting worse not better. There has to be a point at which you say, ok, I am getting £50 (or whatever) further into debt each month, time to stop now.....otherwise you end up becoming one of those people who has debts of tens of thousands of pounds and can see no way out of it in the short term.
At the end of the day they are just horses and it is just competing, there are more important things in life...
I'm afraid selling my PN horse (cheaply as it's a bad time for selling) is the only way I can continue with my Nov/Int horse. It's not what I'll get for selling (though that will help and will repay my Blair entry from my credit card) but not paying out for livery, feed and shoes.
Last year I had the horses at home on the farm and I managed to event 3, this year we've moved down to the village so they're at livery and I shall shortly be down to one. Can't even begin to think what I'll do with the spare time
Can't see me having money for a hunt sub this year either, which being the master's daughter-in-law, and an occasional field-master could become quite embarrassing (plus where else to you get the opportunity to drink whisky at 11am without being frowned upon
Of course you will be able to find the money for a hunt sub!
If you like I can come and raid the village Post Office (if you still have one) as I no longer have any finger prints! (My unemployed status has enabled me to do housework and yesterday I cleaned the oven, I now have acid burned fingers
) *Must wear gloves for corrosive products*
BTW where do you hunt anyway, I am fancy a couple of visiting days this season.
Derwent (if that doesn't give away my carefully crafted anonymity!). Visitors welcome! We do still have a village Post-Office and any ram-raiding tips would be appreciated
It was one of the reasons I wanted to move back here. Entry fees for affiliated events are between 10 and 25 euros. I live in the middle of Belgium, and nowhere is more than 2 hours away. Yes, they often run their events over two or three days, and then you have to pay 55 euros for on-site stabling, but it makes for a very friendly scene, and they still give money prizes (and usually excellent prizes in kind too) for every 1 in 4 starters.
Saying that I must pop down the shop before it closes to buy my euromillions ticket.......
Feeling hugely sorry for my wallet right this second!!
I've made the decision to W/D from Gatcombe too..
So, that 2 events i've W/D from...
And i've effectively given £250 to charity..
I know if you W/D from an event you lose your entry?? but at £125 a go, it's a VERY bitter pill to take!!!!!!!!!!!

PMSL I may hold you to that!
I am not destitute just yet, just taking a realistic look at finances. Of course I do have a possible move to the continent up my sleeve, which I hope would help....
i dont quite know how i afford it at the moment as im only being paid £75 a week and trying to compete one let alone 2 is ridiculous!!! Oh well better to be happy than have money! anyone??
Jeez Millbrooksong you are seriously putting me to shame
I have a really quite well paid job, as does my OH. Admittedly we now have a HUGE mortgage (but no livery, ha ha, my OH doesn't realise he's now subsidising my hobby, laughs in an evil, he'll never catch me way!) but I am always seriously struggling. I am driving an 8 year old car that's really fuel efficient, only have a trailer not a lorry, and am still skint as anything. This is the first year I've evented in donkeys so I am having to buy quite a lot of new stuff, but even still, my eyes water every time I look at my overdraft
Worse still - my job is an accountant (I know...) and I work for a bank. I really should know better. In fact it's probably a sackable offence to be this poor, so I better shut up now
