Pony came off loan injured in august and only came into work on monday which was a few days later than we had hoped. We knew his teeth needed doing and were quite sharp, i was advised just to do light ridden work for about 10 mins every 2 days. When i rode him on monday he was so good and he was so laid back i was shocked and i havent had time the rest of the wek! Dentist came out today and im greatful she did. She felt round his face for any swelling and it was a bit puffy but nothing bad then felt his teeth and asked when he was last done...we said 18months ago when he was last due before he went on loan. Back in april my mum paid for a vetting and vaccinations on him and was prepared to pay for our vet to do his teeth but they said no as he was booked in for a week later. Turns out they didnt have the money to do it so never had it done! He was teething aswell so he must have been in so much pain

His teeths are pointy and really sharp, he has injuries from where his teeth have been pinching his lips with the bit and she was convinced he had been 'man handled' because he was so head shy which we were aware of. I lost track of what was wrong wit him. Vet has to come out tomorrow to sedate him because he is so sore and cannot have a bit in his mouth for the rest of the week. I fel bad for riding him just once because i must have been causing him pain even if he didnt react. How can people go on for almost 4 months like it when he must have been messing about. We asked them the day he came back when he had them done and they told us they hadnt got the money and thought it could wait

Why are there so few good loan familys around! I have only met one loan family that were good and were probably over protective about the horse! The only posotive thing the dentist said was 'you are very lucky his teeth arent growing in a funny direction outherwise he would have an absess'

I've be really pi$$ed off if I were you, people shouldn't have horses if they can't afford to look after them and they could of asked you for help if they were strugling. At least he's back home with you now and getting the care he needs x

That's terrible, I'd be fuming if I was you. Both the horses at ours are on loan to us and we make sure we keep them up to date with jabs, dentists etc. You shouldn't have a horse on loan or otherwise if you are not prepared to look after them and pay the bills that come with them.

Don't be hard on yourself, swift. You thought they'd been done in the past year. Perhaps drop them a line to say what problems he now has and suggest that in future they think carefully about taking on a horse/pony. I take it he came back because they couldn't afford to treat his injury?

Hey, we're not all bad.
I had a broodmare on loan a few years ago, and she always had her worming up to date, her feet trimmed, and proper vet treatment.
Just before I returned her, I had her feet trimmed again, and had her teeth done by an equine vet who was a dental specialist. I then returned her with a turnout rug I had bought for her.
