I've been offered shavings for free.
These are oak shavings.

It seems some people say these are ok, some say not.
There are NO acorns or leaves in these shavings.

When I collected them I was told alot of local horse yards are using them local to him.

As I understand the actual wood bit is ok.

Any thoughts? I have an endless supply if they are ok to use.

I too had an endless as much as i wanted supply. I did try them but found them too dusty for me (i'm asthmatic) The horse seemed ok and i wouldnt say they were any more dusty than not good straw but i cant use straw either so no good for me!
I know someone else who uses them full time on his TB and has no problems.

Not had experience of this, but it is said that the tannin in the oak reacts with the horse's urine and can scald the skin of sensitive horses.

No, it's oak (which is the tree with the most tannin). Black Walnut is also toxic, as is (obviously!) yew. Cedar may cause irritation to the airways, but isn't actually poisonous AFAIK.

Certainly from an inhalation point of view,Oak is one of the safest timbers. There is a lot of Tannin in it however . The most dangerous stuff is the red sawdust from tropical hardwoods,it is truely nasty stuff!

Ah cedar irritates airways. That's probably what I read.

Well looks like I'll be saving myself on the £8 a bale. :)

Phew! Been driving around all day with 2 massive bags in my car, as couldn't decide if it was going to the yard or garden lol.

:)
