well we got our second opinion and the vet said exactly the same thing as the other. Jo has found a place for oakey to go. it is a stud farm and she will run with the mares but NOT be put in foal. she will spend her life in the fields, in luxury - looked after and just generally be a field companion for the other mares.
i am sooo pleased! Jo says this man is very genuine and lovely and he has said to jo is he has her he will never sell her and never ride her as he is like 7ft tall

and he will have her PTS when she starts to be in pain in everyday life.

Agree with Vici, a stud farm, having a companion running with the brood mares? It does seem too good to be true.
Is it your decision or parents or owner (not sure sorry!) I would really need to check it out.
But glad you are not breeding from her, bless her. Hope it has a happy ending fpor all of yopu

I would see about having a legal agreement drawn up - if he has no desire to ride / sell her, then he should be fine having her as a loan horse (presumably he wouldn't pay for her anyway?) and you can have a loan agreement stipulating no ridden work, no sale, and perhaps to talk to you before having her PTS when the time comes? I too am of the 'too good to be true' camp I am afraid.
 
That's great news. Do you mean the second vet thought she'd be OK in foal as well? If so I'm stunned, but nothing surprises me any more.
I agree, if he just wants her as a companion then there should be no reason why he won't have her on permenant loan. Then you can stipulate terms such as reasons why you could remove her if needed, and that, unless it's an emergency, you would decide if she needed to be pts.

I thought she was quite a well bred pony? Will she be ok living out all year round? Will she be rugged in the winter? (She will be more comfortable in her back if she's warm).
You really need to look in to more throughly than it would appear you have done, I'd be asking lots of questions as to why he wants her. The others are right - it does seem to good to be true I'm afraid.
We're all trying to be kind & tactful, but I think the bottom line here is that if you are not 100% sure of this mans motives for wanting her then you have her PTS yourself. It's not a nice thing to have to do, but it's our ultimate responsibility to our animals. From your posts I think that it's possible that your reluctance to make that decision is being taken advantage of.
 
A companion for other mares? At a stud? How bizarre.....never heard that one before.

thanx guys - the loan thing may be a good idea.
all the advice is much apreciated and we will be checking it out very carefully. This man owns one of trainers eventers and trainer will be going up there regularly so will be able to check on her and we will go and see her - also check the place out!

Some studs use a specific mare for the purpose of collecting of semen. So the stallion will mount the mare, but has his penis placed in a collecting tube. If your mare has kissing spines, the last thing you want is some great brute leaping on her back.

Just a thought.
