Oats vs Barley

Another barefooter who feeds oats without any footy effects - for energy in my case though!

dominobrown I would certainly switch (and linseed can work out very cheap! one bag does me over 3 months at a mug a day.

ester- I am trying to switch- it should be cheaper too- just trying to find stockists. I have spoke to my local feed merchants today and I want to bash my head against a wall. I don't think they can have any barefoot customers as they haven't got a clue. The suggestions was sweet meadow mix or something which is 2x the price and covered in honey and molasses. All I wanted was OATS and they had never heard of micronized linseed?!

I get my linseed mail order from Charnwood milling .
You may be able to buy whole oats straight from a farmer if you ask around and then soak it that's the cheapest way to get it .

I'm feeding, amongst a few other bits & bobs, oats & linseed. Barley sends him over the top(as do many feeds) but the oats & linseed seem to really suit. He's naturally very lean but looks good on this, also has loads of energy but it's manageable energy not the crazy, over the top behaviour that other feeds produce. It's also very cheap, I don't mind spending money on feed,& over the years have spent a fortune but do resent it when the horse won't eat the feed/many things make him unmanageably sharp/he does eat but it doesn't put weight on. To find something that works & is cheap is great!

I got my oats from an agricultural feed merchant rather than an equine one as none of them had any if that helps :) Charnwood or ebay for linseed too

I feed oats - I get a 25kg bag for about £6.50. I feed them along with unmolassed sugar beet or Calm & Condition, molasses free chaff and micronised linseed. Works brilliantly on my old hunter.
