What type oats will help condition and energy? Never feed them to my own

For extra speed we feed straight whole oats, they keep better than bruised or crushed oats and just add them when necessary. For condition barley may be better for you and it will give condition and energy. TBH when we needed lots of condition last year Baileys conditioning mix was wonderful stuff!

Just reading your other post I would introduce them gradually (start with a handful and go up daily from there) whilst cutting back on the number 4.

I used bruised oats BTW.

We feed conditioning cubes, oats and hi fi. All ours are ok. We cut back the oats if they are not doing work - as an idea Bruce does 1 hrs hard work a day, he gets 1 hi fi 3/4 oats 3/4 cond cubes twice daily. I cut back on the oats if he is having time off.

[ets he also gets 1/2 scoop of pony nuts in his ball at lunch and over night, so he does not get bored and rip his rugs off. ]

Sounds like quite a lot to me too!

3/4 x 2 oats = 1 1/2
3/4 x 2 cond cubes = 1 1/2
1/2 x 2 pony nuts = 1

= 4 scoops of hard feed per day!

And also FMN I really don't think that oats are the right avenue for you to be taking, get a good vet out to see your horse and ask him to take some bloods too (just for peace of mind), then decide the best plan of action. If you want to put on weight and condition then with a horse of his age and type I would look into a fibre based diet first not oats and hard feed. xk

Oats will help with energy but not as much for condition; barley will help with condition, but not as much help with energy.

Just might be worth thinking about. Both are lacking in calcium so make sure he's getting a good enough vitamin/mineral balance

4 scoops a day is NOTHING IMO for the average 16hh horse that needs it! Plus oats weigh a lot less than nuts!

Barley makes one of the Mossburn horses totally hyper

Barley has a more readily available level of digestable energy than oats and is therefore far more likely to make a horse/pony fizzy than oats.

Oh was going to post, his legs went down with exercise, this and fact he had no temperture would leave me to believe there no infection. THe oats are mainly to give him a bit of a spark, he is easy off the leg, well behaved but lacking any vaa vaa voom, It's hard to explain. I know idealy I would feed firbe, suger beat etc for conidition but Dermot doesn't like these things. I was going to add them with conditioning feed as to make sure his deit is still balanced, and lower them alot when not in enough work. Bran is a good idea ta x

Not really alot of food for a 17.3 wb who does one hour of hard work a day at least I think...that and we have NO grass and he only goes out for 2 hours a day!

[EST] God you think that is enough when i got my jumping pony (24.2) He was on 1 scoop Bram, 1 competition mix, 1 chaff, 1/2 oats and 1/2 sugar beet, three times a day. A little excessive methinks....I cut him down!
