I have never been so emotional over an election of powers across the world as I have just been.

BARACK OBAMA............PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERCIA

What a man, what an inspiration, what a chapter he has opened in world history. I now truly believe that the world can be a better place.

I have been watching his speech and I can honestly say he reduced me to tears.

He IS what the world has been waiting for.

YES HE CAN

Why does he not take office until January? It seems a strange rule, you've won, but you can't have it yet. Also gives Bush the opportunity to do something stupid.

Yes he's fantastic, what a brilliant orator.

Why can't we have such magnetic politicians over here.

The biggest shame ever that his gran didn't live to see him win.

Because there's an immense amount to be done to facilitate the change over, including a lot of people changing jobs etc. It's not a very flexible institution, the American government.

As to why the UK (and Canada) doesn't spawn that sort of telegenic personality, it's as much to do with the system as the culture. Remember that these guys have been running for President for 2 years, and before that they can for their parties, before that for their nominations . . . all in front of the tv cameras. And they have had hundreds of millions of dollars spent on their campaigns, on everything from coaching to decorations to tie pins to air time to speechwriters. It's movie time, all right.

Sure, they have spending limits in American politics but at a level that hardly matters!

Plus, they're a country that likes a good show and they've set up their system to provide it.

Hmm, that sounds a bit snarky! It doesn't mean, of course, that the outcome is necessarily bad, just that the process seems to take over sometimes. After all, President is a public office so it makes sense to elect someone who can get that done. But I do kind of like that the UK and Canada (and most other democratic countries) still actively dissuade people from getting too caught up in the razzle dazzle.

I have been so fed with the whole year long - even on our tv -election process, that I have not really listened to the man. However, on the very few occasions I have, he does seem a powerful orator.

I look forward to seeing what he does for America and the rest of the world. It is fantastic that a black man has been elected and a wonderful moment in current history, given their past history! As previously said though, I hope to god he does not get assassinated by those Americans who just are not ready to accept a way of life which includes anything but racism and white supremacy.

Good luck Obama, and yes how awful that his nan died so so close to his victory, but I bet she is watching

ps I also think a very strong and compassionate first lady is in the White House from January!

BUt in england we can do it straight away - what about Canada? I quess it is because the jobs in government are filled by Civil Servants we are not affliated to a politcial party.

Interestingly the 2 campaigns have spent a combined estimated $5.4 billion on their campaigns, but americans spend an estimated $8 billion on Halloween.

Anyone notice any subtle differences between both McCain and Obama's speeches.....?

For a start only McCain seemed to think that it was the "African Americans" who got Obama in, and his crowd booed when he mention Obama. It's so strange one party built of fear and hatred, another on compassion and love.

Why "well done America"?

The fact that these elections have gone on for a year and a half and cost millions upon millions of dollars when the USA is facing recession is a joke TBH.

I did want Obama to win however, purely based on his promise to remove troops from Iraq when McLain was clearly pro-war. We've got a property in Florida so am pleased to see the state chose Obama too

I think Obama is the right choice for America and Americans....but please...no more Changing the World....I think you've done enough damage already which the rest of us have now got to sort out

*whispers* Unless of course they mean the 'World' in the same context they do when they refer to their NATIONAL baseball league

So Gordon Brown is just the PM of England, then?

well said rambo. yes he has been voted in by a huge amount but there are a great many people who voted JUST because he is young ish and black, not because he will nessecarily do a great job. I think it is an important step for america which is stil very racially predjudiced in places and he does speak beautifully but i believe he has little experience of leading a major organisation and it reamins to be seen whether his comendable idealism will translate into concrete action. sometimes it cant.
i think it is good that such a man has been given a opportunity but sadly it is a proven historical fact that absolute power corrupts absolutely. he will be worthy of the hyperbole indeed if he is still as highly principled and regarded at the end of his term.
the USA has not always wielded its great power wisely even in this enlightened age so i will wait a little before i get exciited about 'world changing'. he needs a few other qualities aside from being a good talker to do that and i dont count being young and black as two of the requirements.

It might not last very long but what a great feeling to get up this morning and find that Obama won! He seems like a good sincere man and most importantly he makes people feel hopeful about the future. NB. This happy feeling I have will last until about 5pm when I have to wade through 4 acres of mud to get the horses in and clean them...

if you feel that going down the hood to sing black power anthems with your homies is the thing to do, carry on, i just dont think skin colour is a factor in what makes a great leader. Nelson mandela and ghandi would have been great men if they were sky blue pink with yellow spots and people doing 'reverse racism' are likely to put this man in the position to which JM07 aludes. it would be naive to think that the election of a black man is not going to anger a great many people, a great many of who are resident in the USA.
it is exactly this that i am afraid of, that this election has been about colour not calibre.
Oh and before anyone starts, i was born in camber well and raised in brixton and have lived in southern US states so i am think i see both sides of the coin quite well.
