Obese horses in showing

Didnt mean it in a rude way, cant understand why you would be into showing when you have the ability and the horse to go eventing! I am glad you appreciate what FMM has to offer in advise and must say the photos she has on her thread are of beautiful horses and deserves to do well and acheive good results - but then again, so do i. !!

, unfortunately only having 9 acres and 10 horses we are unable to winter anything out!

Depends on the management of the land.
I've got 4 out all year round on just over 3 acres. last winter i had 5 on the same amount of land for the winter months.
If i put Large bale haylege in the field in winter, each bale lasts 2 weeks and the grass is fine come spring and summer. My arab at the moment is verging on obese (and no he isnt a show horse, he used to be but now is permanatly lame and a field ornament)

Why ever not? My horses event as well as show, albeit only at Pre-Nov level (they are 5 yr olds), but I had another 5 yr old who was eventing at CNC* level a few years ago and he racked up 8 Supreme Champion Hunters in the show season as well as top placings in the RDS in August.
There are a few top show producers here in Ireland who also event their horses for some of the season. If the horses are able to do it without losing too much condition then it is great experience for them especially if they are to do workers.

I was shocked by a friend one year when i took my mare out to a local show we came first in the class then reserve ridden champion over all. I have turned signatures off but i think she is still in this one it was her on the day. Later a friend commented that i would have done better if she had been better covered, imo she was slimmer than her normal summer weight but i had worked hard to keep her slimmer as i wanted her healthy!
