observation whilst watching olympia

Hey...

Have not read thru all the other posts, so apologies for any repetition, but saw kind hands/riding too last night (Ellen on Ladina B Friday night) and a few bucking billies today in the World Cup with very sympathetic/quiet riding today.

So not all bad!

It's quite normal in showjumping to take outside bend when going round corners. Doesn't mean they aren't schooled or they're unbalanced.

It does make me smile when someone states they have spent their entire life around horses to validate what they are saying but then type the response as a 12 yo chav would.

When you've been afround horses for 30+ years then 'all my life' can lend some possible weight to an argument. 10 years just dont cut it.

I have mentioned before that i have no real understanding on the training or process of showjumping, having not really ever taken part in it before.

All be it despite some of the posts, i have learnt alot, i never stated the horses were not well schooled and i agree about the size of the arena affecting the horses way of going to an extent, i also agree that a clean jump is the most important part of showjumping, as the classes are not judged on style over fences but on if the fences fall.

TBH I doubt they'd be able to jump those HUGE fences if they weren't schooled or were unbalanced! It's one thing hauling yourself over 2ft6 when you're unbalanced but those fences at Olympia are something else...

The jump off last night just made me
shocked.gif
when I saw them jump that wide Rolex oxer at speed. Just amazing. There seemed to be quite a lot of naughty horses, bucking around the arena though. Quite nice to see it even happens at that level

I think the OP might have been referring to horses like L'Espoir, but what I would say is that showjumping is not judged on a subjective assessment of basically how nice the horse looks when carrying out its manoevures, but what it can actually do objectively. And the other way you could interpret it is how the riders are getting the best out of their horses, despite all of their individual quirks. Instead of suppressing them and "making" them go correctly, they work with the quirks to create a partnership which achieves an athletic feat. And despite some of these horses being undoubtedly quirky, I'd like to bet that the majority of showjumpers stay sound and can be trusted to go into the prize giving and do laps of honour, rather than most of the "correctly going" dressage horses.

Liljockey - I too have worked on racing yards - Sir Michael Stoute's and Jim Bolger's. Theres more than a few who have gone into racing from showjumping. tbh though I dread having a lesson with an instructor who has been to college and "through the system". They tend to teach you what they know rather than what you need to do. I'd go for experience any day and I actively avoid instructors with qualifications but no experience through a competition record. Additionally, as a now academic myself, I do not really think universities need to be teaching subjects such as horse management - it is a genre better learned "on the job".

In answer to OP, and as a few others have said, although it's not 'text book' the horses wouldn't be able to jump the heights and widths they do were they not schooled and supple - when I go to the big shows (as a spectator, NOT competitor - maybe one day?!!!) I love watching the people in the warm up ring almost more than in the classes as it's wonderful to see how everything is done correctly, with a good warm up/cool down, beautiful balance and control (the size of some of these warm-ups has to be seen to be believed - postage stamp doesn't cover it!). So I'd agree, although some horses appear a little 'unorthodox' in their way of going, there's no way they'd be at the level they are if they were poorly schooled.

P.S. I know you weren't criticising, merely making an observation, and it just happens that 'certain people' have led this post into chaos and vulgarity (is that a word!), so I'd like to commend you and asking the question to enhance your own knowledge - more people on here should do that!! Oh, and if you ever go to a big show with showjumping and are able to watch people working in for the big classes, DO IT!!!!! ;o)
