OCD is a different concept that DJD - degenerative joint disease (arthritis) but very similar!
OCD is when the cartilage and sub chondral bone underneath doesnt develop properly there fore the joint doesnt work with as much efficiency. Normally diagnosed in youngsters when they come into work and dont stand up to it, or as they grow at 2/3.
Arthritic changes are either synovial in early stages (reversible), or arthritic / osteoarthritic (cannot be reversed as involves changes to the bone). Normally due to wear and tear, so may or may not be linked to above!
Did that help?
If its helpful you may be interested in considering some ideas as to how you might support your horse with this condition as I have had similar experiences and I didnt know where to start in terms of how best to support my horse. -My horse has low ring bone which is a degenerative joint desease. She was lame for about 18mths with a very poor outlook from the vet. However she eventually came sound which is likely to be the result of remodelling which we suspect has been encouraged and supported through skillful barefoot trimming and nutitional supplements- Linseed as an anti inflammatory(omega oils) and organic Cider vinegar to prevent further ossification of the joint.I cannot give you any scientific explanation for this but feel that an experienced and knowledgable barefoot trimmer together with the the nutitional supplements have worked together. We get the linseed from Simple Systems and buy the Cider vinegar in Bulk from Crossgates in Settle N Yorks.Best to you and your horse
