A horse that has been treated for OCD, what sort of working life do they have and if you compete what disipline? Also what sort of management do you complete on a day to day basis. Am curious as my horse was operated on for OCD as a youngster.
Many thanks

I'll be interested to read the replies here as my four year old (as yet unbroken) had an OCD op when she was 18mths. All I can say at this stage is that she is sound & if you hold the leg up as high as it will go for the full 2mins flexion test she doesn't take one short step.
The vets only comment when I asked about her working life was that the most likely outcome was that she may be prone to arthritic changes within that joint a little earlier than could otherwise have been expected.

Well my horse is a 7yr old ISH, and has been very late maturing, and has been brought on slowly and correctly to give his hock (affected joint) time to come right. It was operated on when he was 2, consequently has slight soft tissue damage on that hock which to the untrained eye is not noticable.
His affected joint has caused no problems since I have had him, however the other hock has had arthritic changes which put him out of action for three months last summer. He had a run of bad luck and on this very same leg had a kick, resulting in a high splint, and a capped hock as well-phew!
I keep him on glucosamine and is kept in regular work, isn't allowed to carry too much weight.
We will start competing this year and wandered if any ocd horses are eventing or sj at any level- he was bred to event but may just dressage. Good luck with your mare
