Hi, Having dealt with OCD before I know what is possibly in store in the weeks to come with my current boy HOWEVER I just wondered if anyone who has had the missfortune to go through this with one of theirs could share any pics and experiences with me.

My boy doesn't appear lame on trot up, although appears stiff under saddle / on the lunge which I consider very abnormal for a 4 year old (5 in october). He also does a funny thing with the 'problem leg' in particular when asked to 'move over' - lifts it, holds it in the air, waggling it around for a bit before struggling to place it - this is worse since being back in work after a two week break due to snow / frozen school... 'it's a bit like shivers' as my physio described it... One stifle is swolen, the other, the vet considers normal. He's 4 and 17hh. Something has just been niggling at me for ages that suggests he isn't right but vet has been reluctant until recently to agree (I think, through fear of worrying me after what I went through before with a different horse - said different horse is half sibling to current horse- don't ask!!)

So, did your horse show classic lameness or was he / she 'just not right'?

Any photos?

My friends connie had OCD (yes I know not your more prone to it big type). He showed no obvious lameness and had no swellings. He had just turned 5 and she was doing a little jumping and he just stopped several times and wouldn't jump. Very out of character. Tried few days later same thing happened. Still no sigh of lameness. Had vet out and was x-rayed. OCD in both hocks (apparently in the worst bone possible so was going to spread and affect all other hock bones). Had 2 or 3 rounds of tildren and various other stuff (can't remember sorry). OKish for 6-8 months then became very lame behind and went rapidly downhill, dragging back legs. Sadly PTS after just turning 6. All happen very quickly from horse showing no obvious signs to being a cripple.

My horse was bilaterally lame behind at 7 years old - toe dragging and cross action gait. However no swellings and no improvement with nerve blocks - he had surgery on both stifles and hock, has had steroid injections twice yearly in hocks and stifle. Got him competing locally then sadly went back downhill. Still no better today currently retired and on bute (prn

OCD= osteochondrosis dissicans....
Basically its an issue within the joints of horses to do with cartilage.It can result in pieces of catrilage being abnormal and it can break off and enter the joints......causing lame horses.
stifle hock feltlock and shoulder can all be affected .With the hind legs being the most common.
You can get cyst like lesions in the bones as well but they aren't necessarily OCD....

Thanks all... just to update, I had xrays taken and they came back clear. I am however pretty sure my boy has shivers but with increased workload and fitness, his symptoms have improved :)
