I'm very tempted to take on this gorgeous horse that has had an OCD operation in fetlocks 18 months ago and now been in work for a few months with no obvious problem.

I don't really have a clue what this could mean for the future as the info on google is quite contradictory so if anyone could give me any advice, info etc.. I'd be really grateful (even if it is to say stay away!)

If the horse was operated on young (say 3 or less) and if the 'chips' were not too extensive, then there shouldn't be a problem! Having said that, fetlocks are not a common site for OCD and MIGHT be more prone to arthritic changes.

When you say "take on" - do you mean buy? If so, I'd have a 5 stage vetting done and particularly ask vet to pay close attention to fetlocks. And if he's expensive, I'd want x-rays too. Other than that, if the surgery was done by a GOOD hospital, I wouldn't be too concerned!

I was in the same situation not so long ago. Was told he would be suitable for me RC bit of hunting etc. I had him vetted and he was unsound still on a circle. The vet also looked at the notes of the op and said there was considerable irreversable damage and he may be sound one day and lame for the next two weeks. I wouldn't risk it, but if you do i would consult a vet and get them to look at the notes of the operation. Good Luck

I would be wary of it. D has just been diagnosed with it and the vet said the main problem with it is that arthritis is linked very closely with it and that is something they can't prevent.
