Does anyone know the best supplement to give a horse with OCD. He's had an operation to remove the chips, but is still lame 6 weeks post op! any ideas???

I fed mine glucosamine plus MSM post op.

Have you had the joints medicated? If not, this would probaby be a good staring point. What joints were affected?

it can take a number of months for complete soundness to occur so don't be too dishearteded. What is his routine at the moment?

With my physitis filly who I think had a growth spurt without the necessary vits and mins to support her growth or nutritional imbalance and then was a little on the heavy side and over excersizing, the vet said drop her weight (which we did) then give her all the min and vits she needs with no calories. The nutritionist recommended Dodson & Horrell Ultimate Balancer as you only have to feed 100g per 100kg body weight to give them everything they need, it also has the digestive assistance and MSM (like a mild anitinflamatory joint thing) to soothe her but not sure whether it is ok to feed this if you are giving anti inflam meds aswell so check that!

Someone else on here suggested D & H Surelimb to me which the nutritionist said we could swap to in the summer if she needed even less calories than the balancer was providing so that could be an option for you too.

Hope your horse is ok soon! How old is he and what happened?? Aimee x

I would speak to the nutritionist/vets, they will be able to give you specific advice I did find Louise at D & H to be very good and knowledgeable she deals with all of the Thoroughbred Stud apparently.

my welsh cob has OCD in both his stifles. he was on glucosamine, MSM and devils claw for first 3mths post-op and is now just on glucosamine. we're now 7mths post-op and he's still on field rest. he's goes back next month for a reassessment. it's only in the last month or so he's started to look sound.

My mare was still lame after the Op to remove OCD from her stifles and all the rehab involved; I gave her Blue Chip Joint RLF as recommended by Blue Chip and the Vet but it did absolutely nothing.

After 8 months she was getting worse and was PTS this July - she was a competiton horse and come the end even walking on a hack was very uncomfortable for her. There was no option for her sadly :(

My boy has been put on flexadin since he was diagnosed with OCD in May in his Hock.. Luckily he has never been lame so I cant really say if it has helped or not, but this is what the specialist recommended. It is very expensive but he is insured so luckily NFU pay the expense..
He had the bone chips removed in August and some of the cartlidge repaired but he has left some of the lifted cartlidge there as he had quite a big area which was damaged and if he removed to much it could cause arthritis later in life. He is hoping because he is only 17months old nature will heal itself so I have to wait until he is older to see if he needs the operation done again.

What happened to yours ???

Hope it all works out for you I know how upsetting it is
x
