I found what I thought was a small pink tumour in my mare’s eye on the third eyelid a few weeks ago. I got the Vet to have a look and she thought it could be cancerous. She told me to keep an eye (excuse the pun!) on it for a few weeks and then update them on how it is. It hasn’t changed at all, but it is still there so she is having to her third eyelid removed on Tuesday just to be on the safe side as apparently it’s the place where it can directly affect the sight if it’s left. I’m a bit nervous but the Vet has said it’s a simple procedure and it is going to be done here at home.

Just wondering if anybody has experience with this? How long was the recovery?

My old boy ( in the pic) had this and had the third eyelid removed. His was done at the vet premises with a one night stay - he was around 31 years old. It is a while back now but as far as I recall the aftercare involved eye drops and a fly mask and he recovered well.

That’s good to hear, was he allowed to be turned out after the first night with a mask on? She will stay in but she’d rather go out if she can - I appreciate it it’s really windy then probably best not but at least the flies are going now. Shes still wearing a mask anyway due to sweet itch. Shes only 16 bless her but 🤞 we have caught it early enough.

My boy has his third eyelid removed under general anaesthetic a few years back at leahurst. The ga was the most worrying part. He stayed over night then had a course of eye drops for about a week after and he had a few days of no ridden work but could be turned out as normal

She is having it under standing sedation so thankfully not ga.

As I say, it’s a while back but I *think* he was allowed out fairly quickly as long as he wore the fly mask.
