So, first of all- yes our vet has seen it. He didn’t seem overly bothered but wasn’t sure what it is- he has taken some photos and is going to speak to a few colleagues to see if they have any ideas- this was on Monday and we’re waiting to hear back.

I thought I’d ask to see if anyone here has seen anything similar. 6yr old GLP bitch with totally clear veterinary history, absolutely fit and well and eating normally. Nothing at all else out of the ordinary with her.

This appeared a few months ago then seemed to disappear, I’m in human dentistry and just assumed it was caused by trauma, an inflamed taste bud etc as humans can get. However it has come back in exactly the same place, slightly bigger this time and seems to have a couple of really fine hairs growing out of it- it’s not an easy thing to get a photo of but we’ve had a go 😂. From as much as we can get a feel of it, it’s slightly raised on top as you can see in the image but with no substance/mass underneath.

Any ideas very much welcome but please don’t think I’m using the internet instead of a vet- she’s already been and we’re waiting on a call back!

Could the vet do a FNA under sedation to see if the cells are inflammatory, or could the sample give indication of what may be causing the lesion?

Yes I’m sure they could, that’s likely to be the next step- he just wanted to consult with a couple of colleagues first. I’m just wondering if anyone else has seen similar.

Odd - I would have guessed oral papilloma from your description, especially the hairs but the look doesn't fit. Has she been retrieving rabbit or tracking deer? Could she actually have a few hairs lodged in her tongue?

Shes very odd! Our vet was stumped and he’s one of the old guard 😂 She’s does both but hadn’t really been around the time of it appearing. The hairs are so fine as well. Will give the vet another call tomorrow and maybe push for FNA for a bit of clarity.

We just pinned her down and I’ve managed to pull some hairs out of it with tweezers…. There was no follicle at the end of them and no resistance at all, it clearly wasn’t uncomfortable for her either - she’s SUCH a good girl. Will be interesting to see if it reduces at all over the next day or so after that

All gone 😊👍🏻⭐

We pulled another hair out of it a day later, which was clearly the source of infection as it was covered in crap and some pus came out of it. It’s gradually reduced in size since and is now totally gone 👍🏻

It wasn’t deer hair as wasn’t hollow, but maybe rabbit? Who knows, we’re just very glad it was nothing too nasty!

Thats gross but I bet it was so satisfying to finally get it out for you and the dog!
