I have a geriatric border collie 14ish years neutered bitch. She is starting to really show her age, however last night after being out for her last toilet trip she started coughing after drinking water and then started frantically hoovering the carpet, grabbing anything she could get hold of, also she was licking her lips and gulping almost as if she was going to vomit. She is not the most straight forward of dog's but this was really strange of her, she did eventually calm down but did pace around quite a lot - she is normally comatose all night. Today she has been fine eating, drinking & evacuating normally. Has anyone come across anything similar?

My old bull mastiff cross did this once - it seemed to be to try and make himself sick (he occasionally eats a lot of grass on a walk for the same effect) and he did eventually vomit - think he just had an upset tummy. He's not done it again but at the time it was really distressing - seemed so bizarre.

A quick update on the old girl - she has since been back to he old cantankerous (sp?) self!! My husband reckons she had a 'brain f@rt'! But will keep an eye on he and any further episodes it will be a trip to the vet.

Bless her, glad she is back to normal. When I first saw your post I was going to suggest some sort of tummy upset, as long as she doesn't blow up suddenly or start gagging, panting or struggling to breathe, in which case>>>panic>>>vets!
