My old boy is aged but never showed many signs of slowing although he is so laid back these days its lovely to ride him!

My sharer rides him 2-3 times a week and he finished a season just hunting a couple of times a week with local master where he was a bit footy on few occasions but not hopping lame.

Horse is never sick or sorry although can be stiff.

Sharer called me to today to say that on road he really didnt want to trot although he was striding out in walk as usual, when he did trot on road, he was definately nodding. I said just to walk and see how it went he was fine.

She checked feet for stones and other obvious things etc.

Just got a text to say he is now fine and trotted, cantered on rest of hack no problem?! - it seems to be higher up like his shoulder rather than his foot.

NO heat whatsoever, no suggestion of abscess etc never had any type of thiing like that, really odd.

Do you think age is catching up with him and he was stiff or pulled a muscle? She said he seemed to loosen up and got on with things like he usually does........only a concern as he could benefit from a load of supplements if its joints etc.

Could easily be old age making him a bit stiff at first, wouldnt hurt to put him on a glucosamine supplement. Maybe get him looked at by a physio. Is it worth "working him in" in the field to loosen him up before the faster hacking/road work?
((((VIBES to T))))

Its a possibility but field is rock hard now lol!! - he doesnt to a lot of trotting on concrete with us, but C said he was stiffish when out hunting so could be just a bit of wear and tear....I only worry as its so unlike him, neck, yep rip it open, tummy, colic a plenty but legs wise always been solid as hell, never lame at all or even footy. Age it comes to us all.

he is on MSN supplement, cortaflex, and cider vinegar AND linseed/soya oil etc, anything else that would help? - my baby!

He is irish X TB, this is him last year, early spring looking a bit lean!!

What a lovely boy you have and still willing at 28 ! As they get older they let us know in their own way that its time to slow down a little, just like with us humans. My first port of call would be to get the Chiro or Physio in to check him over - if nothing else, he would benefit from a good massage. As someone else said, daily carrot stretches are a good idea with any horse to help keep them supple.

He is looking good and a credit to you. Do let us know how you get on

Thanks for the pics, they are lovely and he looks marvellous for his age

Perhaps suggest a chat with the Vet as it could be time catching up with him, or there could be an underlying problem

Let us now how he is getting on soon

I think in horse years I'm catching your handsome boy up so I can write a book about being stiff and achy. Sometimes, thoroughly enjoying what you're doing makes the achy stuff seem to go away but it catches up with you the next day! Hopefully, that's all that's happening with your boy - enjoying life so overdoes it now and then. Tlc, being able to park your bum when you need to and - quite seriously - the occasional ibuprofen keeps me ticking over. I'd check with the vet and if it's just a bit of stiffness, maybe have some butes in reserve so he can have a sachet if he feels his age occasionally. Obviously, be careful if you ride him with a bute inside him. Any spare bute sachets that you have, please send to me for sprinkling on my cornflakes

Chex (26) gets like this - seems to be randomly lame/stiff for a day then back to normal. I think its just his age and if he's been galloping about the field, or the ground is hard, or he's tripped and jarred something, just had his feet done etc. I guess when they're older they're affected more by minor things that they'd usually bounce back from quickly when they were younger

. He has been better since he's been on the Newmarket Joint supplement, but still does have occasional bad days. He also had really good legs until the last year or so.

He's a credit to you, looks amazing for his age. Maybe he just needs a supplement for his joints, the ground has gone a bit hard now.

I Have A 25 Year Old , 30 Year Old & A 24 Year Old They all do seem topg et stiff every so foten but the best thing ive ever used is the Codlivene Powder And Blue Chip Dynamic. The Blue Chip Dynamic Is Fantastoc For The Older Horse And It Helps With Joints And Muscle .. The Other Codlivene .. Is A Green Powder Which You Put One Scoop In One Of Their Feeds. When We Run Out Of It All The Ponies Get Very Stiff And Thier Joints Begin To Click .. With It You'd Never Guess They Are At Their Age.
One Of Mine hAS Done Exactly Waht You Said But He Has Done It A Few Times .. Its Proberly About Once Every 3/4 Months He Goes Lame For A Very Short Period Of Time And After He Is Back To Normal.!
Good Luck With Your Old Boy..!
