Murphy had an odd spasm thing today...

I was in his stable and he has IT out, nothing odd there, but then it went really hard(Im sorry!) and then he kinda hunched forward - like he was doing the business, brought his haunches right in and did a little spasm thrust thing.

Then back to normal.
what was going on???!!!

Don't worry, my horse is obsessed with his willy and does this sort of thing all the time. It's probably his hormones raging because of the time of year!

I should change your perfume..you could be in trouble otherwise!

this is unusual if there wasn't actually a mare in season anywhere around (even in smelling distance) but probably nothing to worry about

sounds grim but they do this to pleasure themselves!!
In the Victorian times when the black fresian stallions pulled coffins to a funeral; they used to out spiked rings round IT so when they banged IT against their stomach it spiked them! To discourage them from pleasuring themselves in public!

Just thought you would all like to know that!!

I've heard of them rubbing it on their tummy as well, ha ha ha. Seriously as long as he's weeing ok I shouldnt worry, so long as he doesnt do it in front of your mum!!

Hi Jen

This one made me smile

It sounds to me like he is just flexing himself. Alot of geldings do this especially when you are grooming them - they relax down, get hard and flex so that it slaps on their belly.

Murph is obviously a very healthy boy

Seriously, there is absolutely nothing wrong with your horses, nor is he doing anything wrong, other than just being a horse. Ignore him and leave him to his happy thoughts.

Umm....
Most stallions do this, and occasionally you will find a gelding doing it too.
Winston and Arnie the latter was a rig, both did it in the mornings. Winston continues to do it regularly.
Snoops doesnt seem to bother, just gets his out to air but doesnt do such naughty things yet

Ok serious question, how do geldings still get erect when they've had their bits off. Mine does it occasionally (if I laugh and point he puts it away

)and it's always puzzled me but cant bring myself to ask a vet.

Fair question and one I've been asked - very quietly - a few times.

The testicles are not the only part of the body to produce testosterone. Some gelding retain high enough level of the hormone to actually breed mares (unsuccessfully of course) but all of them still have some coursing through their veins. Combined with the fact that we don't castrate them at birth so "things" do develop normally up to a point they do have function if not inclination.

One of the shettie colts does that after he has been fed. Think its just a normal thing.

At the livery yard Gypsy and Septre used to be at most of the geldings were more than happy jumping on the mares!

Oh horray...other peoples geldings do this too...I did wonder as mine probably does this once a week (that I know of)!!!! But I was not sure how to pose the question on here!
Yes my boy does this when I am trying to put his rug on and as you say...he will have it out and hunch with it being hard...omg!
But at least others do it too...I know there is nothing wrong with my boy but it did worry me when he does not even have any mares around (or other horses for that matter as he is at home)...!

Im really glad its nothing to worry about - my first thoughts were omg he better not be choking again!!

Hehehe its funny how horses make us worry eh?

It sounds perfectly normal to me - but I think you should keep an eye on it anyway to be on the safe side, if it get red or sore or swollen or he has trouble putting it away at all get the vet out, i'm not being a drama queen here but I just had to have my horse pts because he injured his willy.

After reading this thread lol I can now look forward to yet more delights of owning a gelding. Think I had better leave off the perfume now too as well lol.
None of mine have done anything like that yet but some of the mares on the yard are in season at the mo and my big lad is stabled right next to two, and as this will be my first spring owning a horse it should be fun lol.
Now I can understand why friends told me that mares are best lol at least their seasonal habits like winking are mostly hidden under a tail something a bit hard for a gelding to do with a big dangly under his belly lol.
Sos I know I shouldn't laugh but cannot help it as I find it a tad embarrassing at times.
Oh the joys of owning geldings/stallions lol

I think she's laughing at Murph and co rather than your boy HG. Sda to hear of your loss - will definitely keep my eye out for more oddness xx

Thanks Welshrarebit for clearing that up as yes I was laughing at Murph and other stories about horses doing odd things with them lol it just made me think why did I have geldings when people kept telling me to get mares lol.
I agree sad to hear of your loss horsegroupie and no I was not laughing at your story more the bizarre actions of some horse's willies.
I am quite aware of how serious injuries can be to them though especially if they cannot retract them fully etc.
There was a thread on here not so long back where someone was trying to come up with the best idea of a willy sling as her horse had a swollen willy and it needed protecting.
That's why I make sure I keep a close eye on my lads willies and hand check them wherever possible as like everything else on a horse it can have afflictions which can be very serious.
