I jest, of course.
Perhaps it threw its rider (likely, if the tack was put on like that
), escaped from a hitching post, etc and fell or ran off and sustained injury before meeting its end.
A proper mystery for someone to solve.

how odd, agree though.
Horse probably went off on its own without rider, injured and then picked off by the wild animals.

In very mountainous areas, I'm afraid it's not unheard of for horses to go off the sides of paths into areas that make recovery impossible, if indeed the animal survives. Also, in a large area like that it's not that difficult for an animal to go missing. There have been stories of horses ending up in feral herds still wearing bits of tack.
Presumably if the person had still been on it there would have been a concerted search but that was still quite a long time ago, technologically speaking, and the options would have been limited.
Shame to think about the poor horses ending its life that way.
