...picking the dog up has to be the lamest. It took me 20 minutes to get dressed this morning and I still don't have socks on. Luckily, I don't have to do the horses until tomorrow night but I'm really not sure how I'm going to manage it if things don't improve quickly.

It always is something small/daft that does people's backs. I suspect that it is BECAUSE it is something small/daft, that the automatic core engagement, that you don't normally think about, doesn't happen. So all the movement and effort is taken by a relatively tiny muscle in your back.

My personal advice would be to find someone good at kinesiology taping. I was very very sceptical, but had it done for my shoulder and was blown away by how much it helped. I later twisted an ankle horrendously. I watched a video, taped my self up, and was instantly 80% more mobile.

Oh no, you poor thing! Worst thing ever when you're out of action with a bad back.

Last time I injured my back was also for quite a boring reason. We have a dogleg staircase and I came up it too fast on the bend ?

It has to be when my OH is on days too, he’s out of the house from 6am to 8pm. I can cope overnight but in the day, the dog will be wanting to go out, the doorbell will be ringing, I’ll be needing the loo (and standing up really hurts). I would move in with my parents for a few days but my grandma died on Thursday. Mum spent the last 15 years caring for her and she finally has a bit it freedom so I don’t want to go there being all needy.

I have really strained my back before picking our old Labrador up into the boot. Water bottle definitely felt like it helped!

When I did my back I found a heat pad and ibuprofen (strong stuff from the doctor) did the trick very quickly. I'd been struggling about a week before giving in and seeing the doctor. You can probably get a virtual appointment nowadays and an on-line prescription. It's worth it to get the good stuff.

Ouch. Agree heat patches are amazing. And ibuprofen when it gets really bad. Gentle stretches morning and evening and keep walking if you can.

I first did mine swimming of all things (which I hardly ever do) and then doing horse’s studs. Now it’s so rubbish that sleeping on a different bed knackers me in.

I've just done lots of stretching when ever I've had a problem, as many times a day as possible. I'm sure other things work too, but I've not tried them.

You poor thing! Backs can be a nightmare.

I've put mine out before stepping off the pavement awkwardly on the way into my Olympic weightlifting class and leaning over a large shredding machine!

My back always responds better to heat than cold. If it's really bad I take co-codamol and ibuprofen.

Feel for you. Hope you improve quickly. I put my back out cleaning my teeth one morning. I was crook for weeks. Heat patches help and a good osteopath is invaluable. I never get out of bed in the morning without stretching everything out, while I'm nice and warm. Makes a real difference.

It’s pretty sore but starting to ease now that I can lie flat and I have an ice pack on it (I know from previous experience that ice works better than heat for me).

We were at my parents holiday chalet shutting it up for the winter so the two hour journey home in a Defender wasn’t ideal. OH had to grab me by the bra straps (through my clothes) and pull me out as I couldn’t move by the time we got home. It’s a good job he’s a traffic cop and knows how to get people out of cars! I’ve got some of the good drugs from the doctor but they haven’t kicked in yet. I’ve only taken one lot though, 90 minutes and counting until the next ones.

My lovely friend at the yard are sorting the horses tomorrow. Hopefully I’ll be mobile enough by Thursday morning to turn out.

Everything’s too painful at the moment but I try to stretch a lot as a matter of course because my back’s not great even when it’s good. It’s never been this bad before though.

I did my biggie of a back feck up when I was on a health kick and bent over to pump up the tyres of my bike so that I could cycle to work.

4 slipped discs and 6 months off work ?. I should have taken the car...

Ouch x4. I’m pretty sure mine is ‘just’ muscular as it’s gone in the same way a couple of times before but it’s definitely the worst of the times I’ve done it.

Arnica ointment is my constant friend - particularly if it is just soft tissue damage. OH is now an expert at massaging it in then I sit with an electrically heated pad at my back. I find this easily halves the healing time as the trick is to keep everything relaxed enough to allow normal healing to take place.

Twenty years ago I picked up an empty bucket and felt a dull thud in my back; the next morning I was immobile with muscles contracted so much my back was bowed the wrong way and I couldn’t move or pee. Doc came out (those were the days) and prescribed Diazepam (I think) which miraculously relaxed and stopped the spasms. It was agony and I really sympathise, hope you get some relief very soon.
