So, I took my mares off a combo of Calm and Condition and Alfabeet and just kept the AB (for the wet stuff). Didn't twig until yesterday, but since I did the deed my foaming seamonster horse is behaving like a rational polite beastie (apart from the mood swings this time of year seems to encourage).

Could have been the C&C that sent her loopy?

The other one lives in a bubble and is only interested on whats on the other side of the hedge at the best of times. So no clue from her...

Anyone else had/heard of this?

I cant put my boy on C&C either. Try Winergy condition, my boy is a nut bar but on this he's actually manageable and always looks good.

Best stuff I've ever fed, one of my boys is completely different on it, in a good way. Lovely slow condition gain and a level headed pony, unlike anything else i tried!

Just because it's called something doesn't mean that is what it is/does. It's just marketing folks, like most of modern life, unfortunately........try doing some reading of the ingredients and forming your own opinion (after some research, obviously). I'm sure folks on here can advise you.

Sorry to butt in what would you advise to feed instead of C&C? For ex racer who is quite calm majority of time, he is fed Mollichaff calmer and C&C at mo. But willing to change to something else if it may help him be more chilled as about to move yards and be getting out and about more!

It's one of those ridiculous oxymorons along with mollichaff calmer. Basically if it says calmer, its probably just got magnesium in, without removing anything that might have made it mental in the first place! A bit like drinking 4 cups of coffee and then taking a tranquiliser cause you feel a bit on edge.

I was giving it to my lad for a while to put a bit of weight on him and I thought it worked quite well really but I have heard it can be quite heating

yes it is the magnesium i wanted with the mollichaff it does seem to have had a good effect on him since being on that much less on edge although these winds are testing him!

ive heard lots of times that calm and condition doesnt do what it says!

i used it on my tb.
when i changed him to pure feeds i realised what a bad effect the c&c was having!

Pure feeds are great.

I feed my tb pure conditioning pellets.
But they have a large range for all types of horse.

Ditch c&c and feed fast fiber - much better feed IMO. Even that gives my tb some spark, c&c would make him deranged.
I also would swap mollichaff - high in sugar, to hifi molassss free (got oil in it).

Once you've moved you could add baileys no4 for condition

Yes, I have the same view of mollichaff calmer. A lot of these feeds are just loaded with sugar which can fizz up T.B's. Mine seems to be especially sensitive to sugar. Even unmollassed sugar beet makes him whizzy.

I use Simple Systems feeds...They have a wide range and some of it they recommend specifically for T.B.'s.

C&C contains the same ingredients as FF. The difference is that C&C contains peas, which bumps the NSC content to a whopping 18%!

It's important to appreciate that when a horse is 'loopy'on a feed it is actually very distressed. I feel very sorry for such horses :(

Coming up spring I would say most horses should manage fine on FF and/or unmollased beet with a decent vitamin and mineral supplement.

If you want extra then a handful of oats after exercise will be effective but safe.

Calm and condition isnt actually a calming feed which is why everyone will be having problems with it is actually quite high energy but designed to be slow release.

If you want calming feed similar to calm and condition try cool and collected :)

I used calm and condition to help build my mare up after she drastically lost weight after colic, it did that job well and didn't seem to heat her up, although it could have been due to her feeling weak to start with. She started to put in too much condition though so had to have a rethink.

She's now on top spec senior balancer with top chop lite, to which I add magnesium and I have to say, is back to her lively self, which for a 23yo is great to see! And there is no grass in sight to blame it on either!

Thanks mcW and blucano need to buy New bag feed so will have a change i think obviously mix it in. He is moving to a place where he will be in at night until weather improves with ad lib haylage overnight compared to living out with big bale a week between him and 2 others. So he should require less conditioning or energy feed.

I need to stay away from cereals as much as poss as I have one prone to Lymphangitis. Any suggestions for non heating, highly fattening, conditioning feed for a TB & TB cross?

I have found the pure feeds website, and it looks interesting. Baileys cubes have been accused of being the same as racehorse cubes though haven't they?

How much can I experiment with their hard feed before I upset gut/digestion though?

Sorry meant to add..

Workwise - very little at the moment. Weather is against me and my morbid fear of getting on! Once on I'm fine - but thats a different thread for a different day.

They have both wintered poorly, and need to bulk up. So not energy for work, just body fat. Wish I could gift them some...

We used Calm & Condition some years ago & our horse went loopy on it. It certainly didn't do what is said on the bag!

We changed over to Allen & Paige 'Ride & Relax', there's no Molasses or Barley in it & I think it's the barley that affected our horse. We noticed an almost immediate change in temperament when we changed & he was much nicer & an easier ride.

We have had to up his feed in later years as he competes show jumping at a reasonable level. We have now changed to Allen & Paige 'Power for Performance', again this has no barley in it. He now has loads of energy but his head isn't 'sparking'. :)
