Hi

My horse went lame 5 days ago, he is already under the vet for treatment of an internal melanoma and the vet is due again tomorrow. He is swinging his off hind out to the side and floating his foot before placing it on the ground. Not sure whether this could be related to nerves being affected by the melanoma or whether he has been kicked through the fence by his neighbour (this is possible) does anyone have any idea what this type of lameness is associated with? I've seen it before with stifle problems but there seems to be no pain or swelling around this area x

He might have a deep bruise around the stifle if he has been kicked in which case u may not see it or he may have torn the ligament if he has slipped and done the splits out in the field. The vet will be able to tell from an examination if a torn ligament is suspectef.

Could be lots of reasons! We did have one of our a few years ago that was swinging his hind in a very weird fashion, but eventually turned out to be due to a deep foot abscess.

My cob was doing a sort of twist with the hoof as she put it down, it turned out to be a spavin
I agree. My horse was placing his hind mid line so lateral extensions put pay to that and he walks much better now, although it is very slightly evident if you look close enough.
