HI all. My 5 year old didnt eat his tea last night or his brekkie this morning and not all of his tea tonight. He has been eating his haylage and he has been pooing too. Last night and tonight when I went to the yard he was stood at the back of his stable looking sorry for himself. I gave him lots of cuddles and a good groom and he seemed to perk up a little and my OH walked him around the yard but he only nibbled his tea and didnt eat it all. I gave him some carrios and apples and he ate them no problem. I dont know whats wrong with him. The vet is coming tomorrow as I want his teeth checking to see if that is it although he only had them checked in October. He is in the same routine everyday and nothing has changed apart from the horse which he is stabled next to was sold last weekend. Any ideas ?

Nothing other than I would get the vet to see him asap. I didnt think much when my horse went 'off' his food for a couple of days - but the vet took a different view - and we nearly lost him. Ive taken loss of appetite very seriously since then, horses guts need to have food going through it very regularly.

It could be a trivial cause (to our eyes) like the horse going next door but the effects can be far from trivial...Unless vet can find obvious cause with teeth for eg then hopefully he will run blood tests etc to rule out viruses etc.

i went up this morn and hes eaten last nights net( he gets ad lib) and is turned out in the winter 4 3 hours a day in the large pens. he has also drank his water n i gave him some sloppy warm food this morn which he ate. hopefully he has.perked up a bit. such a worry x

Any update CT1. Well done for getting the vet - they can take over to find out what's wrong which will relieve you of the stress of thinking they are ok and then not again. Best for them to examine and test and get them right for you. Hoping all ok

hiya. Yes the vet came on Friday. She checked his gums, listened to his heart and guts. She said his tummy felt cold ( even thought I thought his rug was thick enough) and she asked if he had lost a companion. I told her about the horse next door being sold and she thought he was feeling down and because he was feeling down he was feeling the cold more. She just gave me a pro-biotic to give him and he now has his underrug on too. He has perked up and a lot better. Lots of love and cuddles seem to have been the best remedy. Thank you for asking.
