I have spoke to the owner, they are no longer selling, completely changed their minds...oh well the search continues and it obviously wasn't ment to be!

Possibly, more likely they dont want to sell to you. You said they thought the world of the horse. They probably think you are some kind of dealer. I probably would if someone offered half the asking price.

Get someone else to ring, he might still be for sale

A few years back I bought an ex-racer for just under 2.5K, and I paid over the odds for that simply because I fell in love at first sight. His owner at the time was looking a minimum of 4.5k as that was what they paid, but when I explained to her dad that he was under weight, in very poor condition, had badly over grown feet, couldnt trot properly let alone canter when I tried to ride him, needed a lot of work to get him right and he only came with a headcollar two sizes two big I told him no way in hell was he going to get that. Let him stew and evetually he listened and said ok. Turned out to be the horse of my dreams and was making amazing progress with me until the unfortunate happened.

OP - I think from the way you described the horse what you offered was more than enough! Down by me at the moment you cant even give away good horses!!

I was always told a horse is worth what you are prepared to pay for it.

Don't know if it always worked paid well over the odds for my little filly, I was completely nuts but to me she is priceless and I guess that sums it up well for me.

I guess it depends on why you wanted the horse. If this horse, despite the negatives, had something special that you liked, then surely £1500 is not too much for the years of enjoyment, you'll both have together.

A bad horse at a bargain price is expensive.

The right horse at a higher price is a bargain.

May not have been worth £1500, but to offer nearly half what they are asking and less than what you know they paid is taking the p a bit!

I bought my horse unbroken for £1500, now four years and £10K later, can't get him sold for less than that, it does not matter what they paid, it is what he is worth to you.
