I love the big, chunky monkeys and there is a Shire horse breeder only 5 miles away from me. I was thinking of emailing them offering my services...free!!

I'm not bothered about riding but i would be willing to doing the day to day stuff like mucking out, grooming etc etc.

If someone randomly emailed you to offer to help you out would you snap them up on their offer or be worried that a stranger has shown an intrest in your horse and beef up your security!!! ;)
 
This sounds awfully snobbish but you can usually suss someone out from a couple of conversations. I have done this sort of thing myself (volunteering) just to be around horses. It went down really well when I brazenly knocked on the door of a huge private house owned by a hunting family. I started off being able to hang around with their three grooms, helped out, ended up loaning my first horse from them (and got to keep him at their 5* yard for £40 a week) who they had retired after 17 years hunting. He also bust my back but that's another story :)

I would email to introduce myself and hopefully arrange a meeting. At least it would save the embarrassment of a face to face turn away. Also i think it's rude just to turn up at a yard unannounced. I wouldn't expect someone to turn up at my front door expecting to come in for a look around even if they did offer to hoover!!!
 
Um, if its the one I am thinking of I would strongly recommend that you don't. If you'd like to PM me who it is I can tell you more, but if I told my experiences on this thread It'd get pulled.
 
Phone call is less intrusive than turning up but more personal than email. Horsey people don't seem to like email.
