Have posted this elsewhere, just wondering; I have a filly who was born on Christmas day 2006, so she will be three this Christmas. As she will be four in Dec 2010, does this mean that officially she will be four in Jan 2010? If so, she's only gonna be three for a week!!

From BE rule book

1.19 A horse may compete in (age) classes from the beginning of the calendar year in which it reaches that age

e.g. OP horse will be 4 in 2010 so could compete in 4yo classes in the whole of 2010 even though it would be 3 for almost the whole year.

I imagine BSJA is the same but don't have a current rule book for them.

Thank you for replies xx I know it's only 'official' and I know how old she is and won't be competing her until I feel she's ready.
Scary thought tho' - officially when she was a week old she was a yearling!!!

I think BSJA may actually work the other way for age classes at least.

It says Entry Qualification: For registered horses aged 4 years old as at the 1st January in the current year

However again yours would be one of the youngest as if your horse birthday was 2nd Jan you could compete the whole year after it turned 5 whereas yours will just have a few days.

Unless you plan to do age classes I cannot see it making any difference to be honest. Except that if you entered in a BE event her age would appear based on the year she was born in the programme rather than her actual birthday.

I don't know how it would have been if you did showing with her as alot of the classes say filly foaled in 2006 or whatever.

Thank you DarkHorseB for clarifying this xx Actually, my plans are to event her if she shows promise. She is TB type, unfortunately know nothing of her breeding as I rescued mum from awful dealer, later found mare to be in foal and my girl was the happy outcome! Not bad for BOGOF!!
She is 15.1hh atm, black (no white markings) and has good conformation so fingers crossed xx

What most people do in this situation is become a bit forgetful when they fill out the passport reg forms & get confused between Dec & Jan..........

Believe British Dressage ages a horse according to the year it was born. Only really a problem if entering young horse classes.

Also, it doesn't sound as if you are going to rush to compete your girl but most affilliated bodies have a MINIMUM age below which a horse cannot compete.
