Yes its official. Im completely naffed off. Thought things were taking a change in direction with Chantin, but oh no. Why would that possibly happen.
Shes not been worked now for 2 weeks. The lumps arent getting any better. The origianl swellings went down after the steroid injectiopn. Ive been cleaning them with diluted hibi scrub and thought they were drying out and the scabs coming off the lumps. Everything seemed to going right up until Wednesday night when it took a turn for the worse.

She was covered again in huge swellings but this time worse from the week before when the vet came. So the vet has chased the bloods for me but still no results as yet. No more to do but try her on an increased dose of piriton or she can have another steroid. Nothing again has changed so god knows what is up with her. Oh yes and to top it off shes now kinda looking like a hat rack!



Then Sasha the old girl is suffering with her back end again. Shes finding it hard to walk comfortably, and if you pick her foot up to pick it out she doesnt put it back down to walk away but hops away. So shes booked in to see the vet again but is currently getting a high dose of pain killers to help ease it.

Does anyone want to take them all off my hands for a little while? Open to all types of bids. Dont forget there is 5 of them (at least the other 3 arent doing too bad -and Willow goes at the weekend!)
 
You poor thing. If its any consolation Gen had exactly the same thing and it took us a few weeks to get it under control and to 'discover' what was causing it. He also had what I can only describe as 'wet' farts with his so his back end was gross.

It seems he is intolerant to Alfalfa (Lucerne in another name!), sugars and garlic.

We now have him on very boring horse and pony nuts and redigrass. Been on this for 5 weeks now and no lumps and no nasty back-end.

Good luck with finding out what is causing it and please let us know how you get on (with both Chantin and Sasha

Where is Willow going to?

It still looks like an allergy to me, but then that should come up in the bloods I woul have thought. Could it be her bedding???

I feel for you, i thought they were going last weekend but then got worse.
He had two nights of bute and the HC 45 cream, this morning he has NO swellings and all the lumps are like little spots. All dried and can be picked off.

I washed him in Unlox last week and Hibiscrub, continued to keep him cool and comfortable.

Hes now been wormed as well, not sure if that would help. But today he is back to normal bar these nasty looking scabs.

I know winston got something similar last year but not to this extent. The picture you show is identical to how Snoop was, but he had much bigger swellings, he was also very quiet.

I just hope they all go down soon.

Cheers Folora. I hope to find out soon whats causing it. What I cant understand is I havent changed anything in her life. Only thing is if the manufacturer has changed something. I just hope its nothing too serious with her and that its going to be easy to cut out of her diet/life. If not god knows how were going to cope
 
Not sure what you have tried as causes, but I had one who reacted with lumps like this to protein in his feed. Another horse at the yard had really bad lumps from a numnah that was washed in biological washing powder - the lumps spread everywhere tho. I've seen lumps and bumps from horses rolling in mud - some nasty in the soil that was never really narrowed down.

Hope it sorts itself soon.
 
Willows going to my instructors for weaning. The poor little thing is going to learn what the real world is like without Ebi to protect her.

Shes on shavings and I get them from the same supplier. Unless theyve changed their supply of wood or the treatment on the wood has been changed then I would say no.
 
yes Chantin is very quiet. She not letting me get the scabs off. Shes letting me massage her a little, until i touch a sore patch then she gets upset. Ive even thought about turning her out in a fly sheet or nothing but dont think shed cope as it is still quite cool - ive decided the least she can have on is a rain sheet
 
Could be worth thinking about it though (bedding that is) if it has come up again. Someone who used to be on our yard (her horse has since passed away at a grand age of 30) used to be absolutely fine on shavings. Then one day, he came out of his stable with a rash very like your girls which did not go down until she put him on straw to just rule something else out! It was really weird... but never came back again!
 
Hiya, my horse had exactly the same thing, only worse, last month. It's so frustrating and worrying. It turned out that he was allergic to whatever his rugs had been washed in. I was absolutely raging, as the lady who did them specialises in washing horse rugs, which is why I used her! Unfortunately she must have used some sort of "chemical" which fudge reacted to.

Can I give my horse Piriton?

Occasionally horses get sudden and severe allergic reactions on the skin. They come up in “bumps” or raised flat areas from one to several centimetres across.

These may be all over, on both sides or localised. This is called Urticaria or Nettle Rash. This usually occurs for no obvious reason, but can occur when changing field or hay, after drug administration or a fly bite.

If ignored, or treated by cold hosing, the lumps may go down after a few days, but commonly burst to leave suppurative sores. Treatment by a vet with an injectable corticosteroid is a very effective treatment. Antihistamines are useful at preventing allergic reactions, at least in humans, but are not so useful once the reaction has occurred. When first exposed to an allergen, e.g. a fly bite, histamine is released at the start of the reaction.

This histamine attracts the body’s inflammatory chemicals, causes the itching and sets everything off. Once this process has started it is too late for antihistamines, only corticosteroids will do. The drowsiness effects of antihistamines are very powerful in the horse. The dose of Piriton is 20 tablets for an average 500kg horse, but this normally makes them very sleepy. Other antihistamines, such as Atarax, are less sedative, but generally antihistamines are rarely used in horses.
 
i hope something shows up on her results then I can try to keep it out of her diet. Fingers crossed something shows up and that its easy to remove from her diet.

Hes allergic to barley, wheat and mollases and all of these were in his diet, and like i sed on my pm, even though they had been in his diet for 18months before this reaction had occured, it was a gradual build up of it that caused the reaction
 
We are having a bad day too.
Rafi our lovely young horse that has qualified for the spillers final ,has cut his fetlock very badly and vet has put him on loads of medication and bandaged.He is back in his stable[he has only been out 4 days because of mud fever] and at the moment its bleak.Vet also checked our old[wonderful] pony as she was looking really poorly and she has had blood tests.
Just when you think things are going well you get slapped down again,someone up there hates horse owners enjoying themselves

I don't know if something started growing in the field that he got hold of, or whether it was something in his hay, but I think it was his hay.

We seem to have about 3 types of hay all mixed up (some soft, some stalky etc). I don't know which type it was he was on though

I just keep an eye on him.

He has had it once before on our last yard, and he got it at the same time as a few others. We put that down to a knew batch of haylage.

At the moment shes having Spillers HAppy Hoof, Dodson & horrell Build up cubes and Speedi Beet. I wash all her clothes in Fairy non bio powder> I was wondering if she had a low immune system as shes suffered with mud fever since Christmas. Maybe the mud/ground has got something to do with it.

I know someone said about the feed, their vet said to use Dengie products only. Well i currently only use Dengie chaff with Ultimate balancer.
Snoop was the same, very sensitve in that area, but much better now.
Have you ever tried that HC 45 cream? its been really helpful to snoop.
 
have heared though that straw can be as bad if not worse. Also went and bought a load of shavings a little while ago so got a huge pile of them to use. I can always get some straw to try from local farmer but would hate it to get worse. Would love to get the results back before I make any huge changes.
 
I completely agree with not wanting to change anything until the tests come back... it was just a thought if it's nothing she is eating. Rather than straw you could think of something like the stuff I foaled Hannah on (Nedz Bedz) or something that is hemp based as I think they are good for allergies.

I hope you find out what it is soon because I think the worst part is not knowing.

ooh very interesting. I do send my rugs away but havent had any done for a while now. I use Fairy non bio powder on all her summer sheets (she has them on all the time under all her rugs) so unless Fairy have decided to change some products - will have to ring them to see
 
i have done a lot of research into it but not seen anything about that. Shes currently on 18 tablets a day - 9 twice a day, just been increased from 12. Shes 17.2 and weighs around 625kg. Someone else mention Atatrax. I take this for my skin and was wondering if it would be worth getting some for her especially if it makes her less drowsy.
 
havent had chance to read it yet. Very interesting re the allergies. I really cant wait for the bllods but they can take up to 10days. THey were sent off last Thursday so should be back any day now.
