So, last night, as I was meeting friends for dinner, unhorsey OH opted to take care of Big Bad Horsey. Contrary to what I thought he would do, he set himself the challenge of actually taking her out of the stable, turning her out, mucking her out, feeding her and watering her. I only expected to him to feed and water her after he made a big fuss about handling her, but I guess he wanted to face his demons.

By the time I met up with my friends, he went off to the stables with the recipe for Big Bad Horsey's dinner.

By the time my friends and I had reached our main course, my phone rang. It was OH. The conversation went like this:

OH: "Honey, I've got a problem!"

Me: "What!!! What happened?"

OH: "Well, I turned her out in the turnout area."

Me: "You actually took her out of her stable! Well done!"

OH: "Ehm, I didn't realise the gate on the other side of the turnout area was open!"

Me: "Oh my God, where is she?!?"

OH: "She's now in the outdoor school. But the gates there are locked now, so she won't be able to get out. Can I just leave her there whilst I muck out?"

Me: "Can't you get her to come back to the turnout area?"

OH: (Shouting softly to Big Bad Horsey) "Come Back!!" (Turns attention to phone) "No, she's not coming back! Can I just leave her there?"

Me: "No, you can't just leave her in the school until tomorrow!!!"

OH: "Not until tomorrow - but until I'm finished mucking out!"

Me: "Oh, ok. No one's gonna be using the school, right?"

OH: "No, it's quite late, you know."

Me: "Just try catching her later then."

By that time, my friends were bursting out laughing.

After desert, my phone rang again.

OH: "I'm finished."

Me: "What, mucking out? Where is she?"

OH: "She's in her stable."

Me: "You caught her? Well done!"

OH: "Well, she was getting bored, so she came back."

Me: "So she was at the gates waiting for you."

OH: "No, of course not. We met mid-way. I was really nervous, but she let me catch her. I don't think she will let me next time. She'll call my bluff."

I have to say I am very proud of unhorsey OH. Not only did he manage to do all the horsey stuff, but provided us girls with decent entertainment, too. :D

Well done OH! I went away last weekend for the first time without OH, and he decided he was happy to me main carer of my lad. Under the watchful eye of another lady on yard however! He did a great job of bringing in, feeding, rugging, picking out etc. I think he kind of enjoyed it too!

Yes, I am very proud indeed... and I think he is proud of himself, too!!! And the fact that it apparently took him less time than me (because I tend to move at a very leisurely pace at the yard)!!! ;)

As horsey types, it is sometimes hard to understand just how scary horses are.

I used to have a real fear of horses, which I overcame so that I could ride, even then I was not entirely comfortable around horses, I was still sure they would bite or kick me at any second, I just knew I was fast enough to avoid either.

Now I am a dedicated horsey type and can see the other side of the coin, but just imagine something you are really scared of, spiders, rats and mice, snakes, bank managers etc and then think how you would go about handling the thing that scares you (well, maybe not the bank manager).

Well done OH, you have taken the first step towards becoming a horseman.

Whether he takes the next step is another matter. :D
