Be honest do you ever have a giggle to yourself if you see someone doing a test that maybe isn’t up to that standard? Does it frustrate you or are you professional to the last?

Just wondering what you are saying inside that box/car of yours???????

[/ QUOTE ] Jo - you ought to volunteer to be a dressage judge's writer sometime - I can assure you it is very illuminating (and often very entertaining too)!

I would love too, but I don’t know any dressage judges. Do you think if I asked at Cobham manor they would want somebody, I wouldn’t want to look stupid? Only thing is though my spelling is shocking!!!!

Oh goad, so they do laugh at us!!!!!!!!!

Couldn't agree more

Although I was encouraged to see how the comments under their breathe were turned around to give a constructive comment on the sheet.

I like the get out clause at the bottom 'shows promise' - yeah my backside it does

I know my tests have always been appaling when I get the comment "An attractive little pony"

JoElla organisers of shows are always desperate for help. I have done loads of writing; it really is a quite "enlightening" experience; its a great laugh too!

I was judging a test once and the horse was sooo behind the riders leg that I said "going...going.......going..........gone" as it fell out of canter on a circle - the writer wrote it on the test sheet

. Needless to say we rewrote the sheet

You don't need to know any dressage judges at all - just volunteer at your local RC or at Cobham Manor or anywhere locally that runs dressage comps. They are normally really grateful for people to volunteer. Don't think your spelling will be a problem - it looks fine on here and most of the time you are abbreviating during a test anyway.

It's rare for the judge to take the mickey out of competitors - often they sympathise with them - but some do have a sense of humour and are great fun to write for. I used to do a lot of dressage writing and it has taught me an awful lot. Trouble is now I know what I should be doing, but I'm just incapable of doing it! But I do have a good idea now of whether my test is good or cr*p in the judge's eyes

Go on be a writer, u will be amazed how much you learn. Dont worry about spelling most of the time you write in s/h anyway. For square u can draw a square, no need to write it, same for circle. If you do have a go don't 4get to let us know how u got on.

Go on have a go..... its great fun.... at first you panic and wonder if you will ever keep up with what the judge is saying, then you get the hang of it and will actually find yourself being able to watch the movements and write at the same time.... as everyone has said You learn so much.....

It is best to have a sense of humour but you must always remember that no-one ever want to ride a bad test and remain professional- it would be awful if someone saw the judge and writer laughing at them, sometimes things just go wrong which can lead to funny situations. In many cases the riders end up laughing with the judges.

As i have decided today that judging is a worthless waste of time when there are so many muppets doing it, i think it would be a fantastic idea to have a rider comment sheet on the judge at each competition. If it makes you lot feel better there are a few that i could happpily say should give up and take up knitting. As for being rude about the competitors in the privacy of our cars well we are only human and for me it is only the 'nasty' kicking and yanking' types who usually suppose i cant see the digs they are giving their horse that i am mean about, and usually tell them so when they finish!!

Yes many amazingly funny things are said by judges, but we rarely giggle, more grit our teeth! I sympathise with dolores too as I am friends with several high level judges and yes the blue rinsers are out there! It is known, but they WILL retire.
'Heard at Hickstead by foreign international judge....(a friend was writing) of junior riders horse. "It is not a horse! It is a big fat elephant with no suspension!"
I once gave a 1 with the comment...out of control. There was no option.....the horse bolted as it entered and careered around the first three movements sideways, at one point bouncing off the fence! It also eyed up the car, but settled for lashing out at the reader.
I'm taking a break from judging at the moment....I wonder why???????

Willough once jumped an arena board and got a comment that the SJ and XC was not until later, but was sure to do well!

Bee laughed at her when she jumped and the judges comment for that movement was 'nice smile' This was BE PN.
