Damn, blast and bug**r! Have just come back in from feeding the foals to find Widget (big fat hefferlump of a Basset) and Monty (super fit handsome hairy lurcher, the only one of the four boys that is still a man!) tied together!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

She has been growling at anyone coming near her and everything was spark out in front of the fire. I was only gone 5 minutes, damn dogs!

To make it worse, this was her and Legend's last chance to have another litter (KC rules on age of bitch) so there's no point having the jab tomorrow, I might just as well book her in to be spayed next week. It's a real blow, we had a waiting list for puppies but not basset x lurcher ones!

Must say, it would be a rare cross; would be interesting to see which breed shines through; whether it would be a thin basset on long legs or a lurcher on stubby legs but it's not worth the risk of not being able to sell them that bugs me - we need more dogs like a hole in the head! Will see what OH (who is in bed) says in the morning but my gut instinct is to have her spayed asap and be done with it.

Your thoughts would be welcome - as well as your laughter!

Sorry, can't be faffed to move this to dogs!

you poor thing, i would be inclined to either get her spayed or have the jab really.Don't think those two breeds are going to grab people really,i love bassets, they are adorable. I'd ring your vet and have a chat with them in the morning and they can maybe give their oppinion on things.

I know, I'm still tittering here! If you had seen them you'd have hooted; talk about imcompatibles!

Puppies have to be born before the bitch is 8 years old to be registerable with the KC, L otherwise it wouldn't be a problem really (she's 8 in September). Being mercenary, they are worth far more if KC registered, but at the same time I wouldn't want her any older to have another litter anyway - it also means leaving Legend as a whole dog for longer and he's a right pain in the proverbial when anything's in season; his bits have been on notice for the chop as soon as he had mated Widget anyway.

I'm pretty sure that if they have the jab, they shouldn't be mated again that season or if they are, they're not liable to take but I'm willing to be corrected on that. Vet will tell me tomorrow when he comes to ride Joey!

BTW Is the vet still in love with Joey?

Absolutely besotted thank goodness!

He's long reining everywhere and not even looking at traffic which is a miracle as we are in our own little backwater here, he's never seen any before! He's had shoes on and not batted an eye apart from looking at the smoke. He's been sat on and ridden up the road too (found it very hard to get his balance at first, like a drunken ship!

) Almost better still is vet's wife likes him too which has to be a bonus!

I share your mirth but now have a headache too thinking of all the options - or lack of them really!

Monty has just come and stuck is head under my arm as if to apologise and so he might!

Sorry P - but the images in my head of the results of this cross are hilarious!! Widget obviously doesn't realise she is a Bassett and sees herself as a long legged supermodel!!

I know, I can imagine your shoulders heaving!
Can you imagine what a cross between this

and this

would look like?!

Wouldn't be so bad if she only had one but she usually has eight! I just can't see being able to home that lot can you?

Did your Mum not teach you any standards?

Whoops sorry forogt you are a Basset!
tongue.gif
You don't have standards.

You were my nearest hope to have a full Basset complement my Bassador & Labrador. So I could have one of each & a half!!

Oh Pants Pat! Trust a dog to scupper or best laid plans!
Will take a colt instead???!!!

Hope all goes well with the vet tomorrow. Wold love to see his face when you tell him!

I think you have to have the basset spayed, which is a shame, but preferable to having odd pups with no homes.

I would have thought you could have been more careful TBH with an unspayed bitch of any breed with an entire dog of any breed.

It's not nuclear physics to keep them apart - I think you've been a bit irresponsible.

Well you aren't alone. There have been a few HHO hound accidents over the past year.

I am struggling to imagine what a BH and a lurcher cross would look like chuckles

As the proud owner of a Basset hound (Betsy-Basset), I can only guess that Monty caught Widget in a moment of weakness
blush.gif

I think the resulting love children could be BURCHERS.
Seriously though, tough call to make - the pups will probably be gorgeous and a lot of people still pay reasonable money for a nice cross-breed (we also have a Dalmation x Newfie

)

I'm sorry but I'm afraid that has given me a giggle. I think you are right about the jab, it always used to be advised to let them have a season after it before mating. Maybe things have changed nowadays, so would be worth checking with the vet. It can be so frustrating when the little dears mess up our plans
frown.gif

See, I was doing alright and didn't laugh until I saw the lurcher, that dog has the most gorgeous face! I would have her jabbed to be honest, its sods law that the pups would turn out to be the oddest looking things and just to spite you she would have 15 or something ridiculous like that!
grin.gif

I have to say - if you read my post in the dog bit - the jab doesn't always work. Mind you my vet says we are his second failure in thirty years and the first was thirty years ago!!

Ain't that typical of dogs though as Bedlam pointed out so eloquently, I was irresponsible for leaving them together!
shocked.gif
In my defence though, having had said Hussy since she was born, her seasons have all followed a regular pattern - and this act of wanton ness was not usual in the slightest!

Well, had words with im this morning and he roared, thought it highly amusing and trying to imagine what they would look like.
As I thought, the jab would knock her out of season anyway so we have taken the way I thought we'd have to which is to spay her in a fortnight or so to allow the organs to recover and avoid a case of blood loss if we operate too soon. Oh well, it's just being done a little earlier that's all; shame no more Bassets though, sorry. You'll have to wait for Weasel to have a litter next time (Monty and Legend will be booked in to be nutless very soon, believe me!) and she is a cracking hunter, has a real nose on her and very steady to a line!
smile.gif

I think they'll be great! I knew of a Corgi x German Shepherd which was like a corgi with a German Sheperds head! He was a fantastic dog and everyone commented on him when he was out and about. I also knew of a Basset x which had a Bassets body and ears and a terriers face. He was well known around the horse shows and was a very popular dog. Cross breeds are becoming very popular i.e. Labradoodles etc. You could always market them as the new designer "Burcher" or "Lasset Hound"!
I think they'll turn out to be lovely dogs and people love something a bit different. I hope you find lovely homes for them.
